How to Install the 273RLR/274RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of the 273RLR and 274RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connectors, converting livefront terminations to deadfront for UD cables.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Wire brush, Hotstick, Cable cutting tool, Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Suitable sensing device
Supplies needed:
Replacement Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), Hose Clamp, Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm)
- De-energize and Remove Existing Livefront Terminator
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before proceeding with any installation or removal. Remove the rubber cap from the existing terminator. Cut off the connector at the top of the terminator. Disconnect the ground lead from the base of the terminator. Remove the terminator housing from the cable.
- Prepare the Cable
Train the cable to be straight and in-line with the bushing centerline. Measure and cut the cable to 10-1/2 inches from the bushing centerline. Verify the insulation shield measures less than 6-1/2 inches from the end of the cut cable; if greater, consult an ELASTIMOLD representative. Carefully remove 1-3/8 inches of cable insulation from the end, ensuring a square cut and avoiding nicks to the conductor.
- Install the Compression Lug
Wire brush the bare aluminum conductor immediately after stripping. Install the compression lug onto the conductor, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Align the lug's threaded hole with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Wipe off any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off any excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.
- Connect the Concentric Neutral
Insert one end of a No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tight, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation. Add the supplied hose clamp as shown in the diagram and tighten it snugly, but do not overtighten.
- Connect the Elbow to the Bushing Plug
DANGER: Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing ONLY if the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Using a full insulated hotstick type live-line tool, connect the elbow to the bushing plug. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND. Place the elbow connector receptacle over the bushing plug, inserting the elbow male contact until slight resistance is felt (contacts approximately 2 inches apart). Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock on the elbow and bushing interface.
