How to Install Elastimold 273RLR/274RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing Elastimold 273RLR and 274RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connectors, converting livefront terminations to deadfront for UD cables.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

Wrench, Wire brush, Hotstick tool, Suitable sensing device (for 274RLR), Wire strippers, Crimping tool

Supplies needed:

Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied), Hose Clamp, Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm), Ground connector, Silicone grease

  1. De-energize and Remove Livefront Terminator

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation or removal of parts. Remove the rubber cap from the terminator, then cut off the connector at the top. Disconnect the ground lead from the base and remove the terminator housing from the cable.

  2. Prepare the Cable

Train cables to be straight and in-line with the bushing centerline. Cut the cable to measure 10-1/2 inches from the bushing centerline. Carefully remove 1-3/8 inches of cable insulation from the end, ensuring to cut squarely and without nicking the conductor.

  3. Install and Crimp the Compression Lug

Wire brush the bare aluminum conductor and immediately install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.

  4. Assemble the Elbow Housing

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back and forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with a wrench until the wrench bends.

  5. Connect the Concentric Neutral

Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tight. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, providing adequate slack for elbow operation. Add the supplied hose clamp as shown and tighten it snugly, but do not overtighten.

  6. Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug and Lubricate Test Point (274RLR only)

Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant ONLY if the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Operate the connection using a full insulated hotstick tool; do not operate by hand. For 274RLR models, if performing a voltage test, remove the test point cap with a hotstick (peeling off at an angle), then after testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it tightly.
