How to Assemble and Modify QUICK TRAY PRO™ Cable Tray

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for cutting, bending, and connecting QUICK TRAY PRO™ Cable Tray sections to create custom cable management pathways. Learn to form bends, tees, and elbows, and reduce tray width for various installations.

Estimated time: 2h

Tools needed:

Hoffman side action bolt cutter (QTPBC)

Supplies needed:

QUICK TRAY PRO™ Cable Tray sections, Splice Kits (QTPBNWK/QTPBNWKBLK), Splice Washers (QTPSSW3/QTPSSW3BLK), Universal Splice Bars (QTPUS10/QTPUS10BLK), T-Connection or 90o Splice Bars (QTP90TKIT/QTP90TKITBLK)

  1. Plan Your Cable Tray Route

Determine the optimal path for your cable tray, identifying all straight sections, required bends (90-degree, large radius, or level changes), and junctions (elbows, 90-degree tees, Y-junctions, or width reductions). Refer to the documentation for specific cutting patterns for each modification type.

  2. Cut Cable Tray Sections to Size

Use the Hoffman side action bolt cutter (QTPBC) to make precise cuts according to your planned layout. For any cut, first decide which wires must be removed. Position the cutting jaws on the cradle wire and cut side wires at an angle away from the new end. Then, turn the tray over and cut bottom wires similarly. Make one clean cut to minimize sharp edges that could snag wires and to help protect against corrosion.

  3. Form Bends and Junctions

Form the necessary bends or junctions for your cable tray system. For 90-degree bends, cut all side wires at the bend location, then smoothly bend the tray until the inside edges meet, securing with Splice Kits and Splice Washers. For large radius bends, remove outside and bottom wires from every other mesh section, then bend and fasten. For elbows, 90-degree tees, or Y-junctions, cut the necessary side and/or bottom wires from the tray sections, align, and connect them securely using Splice Kits, Splice Washers, and appropriate Splice Bars. For changing levels or reducing width, remove specific wire sections as detailed in the documentation, then bend or connect with Universal Splice Bars.

  4. Connect Tray Sections

Join all prepared and modified cable tray sections together using QTPBNWK/QTPBNWKBLK Splice Kits and QTPSSW3/QTPSSW3BLK Splice Washers. Ensure all connections are tight and provide structural integrity to the cable pathway. For splice bars, ensure they provide extra support and stability to tray sides.

  5. Install Cable Tray Supports

Mount supports for straight sections at typical 6-foot (1.5m) intervals. Position supports within 24 inches (610mm) of any splice on straight sections. Ensure the span between supports does not exceed the length of the tray. Provide additional supports around all bends and where the cable tray changes levels to ensure stability and proper load distribution.
