How to Install and Fabricate QUICK TRAY PRO™ Cable Tray Systems
This guide provides instructions for planning, cutting, bending, assembling, and supporting QUICK TRAY PRO™ cable tray sections to create custom cable management installations.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Hoffman side action bolt cutter (QTPBC)
Supplies needed:
QUICK TRAY PRO™ Cable Tray sections, Splice Kits (QTPBNWK/QTPBNWKBLK), Splice Washers (QTPSSW3/QTPSSW3BLK), Universal Splice Bars (QTPUS10/QTPUS10BLK), T-Connection or 90° Splice Bars (QTP90TKIT/QTP90TKITBLK)
- Plan Tray Layout and Modifications
Before beginning any cuts or assembly, determine the required cable tray configuration. This includes planning for straight runs, various bends (90-degree, large radius), tees (90-degree, Y-junction), width reductions, and level changes. Review the specific cutting patterns provided in the documentation for each desired modification to ensure accurate preparation.
- Cut Cable Tray Sections
Use the Hoffman side action bolt cutter (QTPBC) to make all necessary cuts. This tool is designed for precision cuts, minimizing sharp edges that could snag cables and helping to protect the cut from corrosion. When cutting, always start with the top side wire, positioning the cutting jaws on the cradle wire and cutting at an angle away from the new end. Repeat for all remaining side wires. Turn the tray over and cut the bottom wires from the underside, again resting the cutting jaws on the cradle wire and cutting at an angle away from the new end. Make one clean cut to eliminate the need for grinding or touch-up.
- Assemble Tray Sections and Form Bends
Join straight sections or modified sections using QTPBNWK/QTPBNWKBLK Splice Kits and QTPSSW3/QTPSSW3BLK Splice Washers. For 90-degree bends, after cutting the wires according to the pattern, smoothly bend the tray until the inside edges meet, then secure with Splice Kits and Splice Washers. For large radius bends, remove outside and bottom wires at every other mesh section, then bend the tray and fasten the inside of the bends. For elbows and tees, cut wires from the relevant sections, align them at the desired angle, and fasten with Splice Kits and Splice Washers. Universal Splice Bars or T-Connection Splice Bars may be used for additional support and stability where indicated.
- Support the Cable Tray System
Install supports for straight sections at typical 6-foot (1.5m) centers. Ensure that supports are placed within 24 inches (610mm) of any splice on straight sections. The span between supports must not exceed the length of the tray section. Provide additional supports around all bends, tees, and wherever the cable tray level changes to maintain stability and prevent sagging.
