How to Install and Customize QUICK TRAY PRO™ Cable Tray

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for planning, cutting, bending, and joining QUICK TRAY PRO™ cable tray sections to create a customized cable management system.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

QTPBC Side Action Bolt Cutter

Supplies needed:

QUICK TRAY PRO™ Cable Tray sections, Splice Kits (QTPBNWK/QTPBNWKBLK), Splice Washers (QTPSSW3/QTPSSW3BLK), Universal Splice Bars (QTPUS10/QTPUS10BLK), T-Connection or 90° Splice Bars (QTP90TKIT/QTP90TKITBLK), Cable tray supports

  1. Plan Cable Tray Layout and Mark Cuts

Review your desired cable tray configuration and overall layout. When planning for bends, junctions, or width reductions, consult the cutting patterns provided in the manual for your specific tray size and desired shape. Clearly mark the wires that need to be cut, noting that red areas on diagrams typically indicate wires to be removed.

  2. Cut Cable Tray Wires

Always use the Hoffman side action bolt cutter (QTPBC) for precision cuts. Start by positioning the cutting jaws on the cradle wire of the top side wire and cut at an angle away from the new end. Repeat this process for all remaining side wires, ensuring clean cuts. Turn the tray over and cut the bottom wires from the underside, always resting the cutting jaws on the cradle wire and cutting at an angle away from the new end. Make one clean cut to eliminate grinding or touch-up, which also helps protect the new cut from corrosion.

  3. Form Bends in Tray Sections

To create a 90-degree bend, cut the side and bottom wires as per the pattern for your tray width, then turn the tray on the uncut side and smoothly bend it until the inside edges meet. For large radius bends, remove outside and bottom wires from every other mesh section at the bend location, then lay the tray flat and pull the ends together until the remaining cut sides almost touch. For changing levels, remove every other side wire section from both sides at the bend location, then smoothly bend the tray up or down to the desired angle.

  4. Join Tray Sections Using Connectors

Connect straight or modified tray sections using QTPBNWK/QTPBNWKBLK Splice Kits and QTPSSW3/QTPSSW3BLK Splice Washers. For elbows, align the wires of two cut trays at the desired angle and fasten them securely with splice kits and washers. For a 90-degree tee, cut side wires from the tray forming the top of the tee, then align and fasten with splice kits and washers. For a Y-junction tee, cut both tray sections, bend side wires to 45 degrees, and connect with cut universal splice bars (QTPUS10/QTPUS10BLK) and splice kits/washers.

  5. Install and Support the Assembled Cable Tray

Once all sections are assembled and customized to your desired configuration, proceed with the physical installation of the cable tray system. Place straight section supports at typical 6-foot (1.5m) centers. Ensure that supports are positioned within 24 inches (610mm) of any splice on straight sections. The span between supports should not exceed the length of the tray. Provide additional supports around all bends and wherever the cable tray level changes to ensure maximum stability and load bearing capacity.
