How to Repaint a Hoffman Enclosure

Guide on preparing and repainting Hoffman enclosures with TGIC polyester powder coating.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

180 grit sandpaper, 220 or 240 grit sandpaper (optional), Solvent, Paint manufacturer's recommended tools

Supplies needed:

TGIC polyester powder coated Hoffman enclosure, Paint compatible with TGIC polyester powder coating, Primer (if recommended by paint manufacturer)

  1. Prepare the Surface

Thoroughly sand all enclosure surfaces with 180 grit sandpaper. If sanding marks are objectionable, finish sanding with 220 or 240 grit sandpaper. Wet wipe all surfaces with a solvent to remove any possible contaminants. Consult with your paint manufacturer for proper cure time and hardness prior to testing the paint for adhesion.

  2. Select Appropriate Paint

Choose a paint that exhibits good adhesion properties over polyester powder. Recommended types include two-component epoxies, some two-component polyurethanes, and alkyd baking enamels. If using alkyd finishes, do not bake at temperatures exceeding 150°F to avoid discoloration.

  3. Apply Paint

Apply two or three medium to light coats of paint. Allow two to three minutes flash off between coats. Allow paint to cure adequately according to the paint manufacturer's instructions.

  4. Test Adhesion

After the paint has cured adequately, test the paint for adhesion. Consult with your paint manufacturer for proper cure time and hardness prior to testing.

  5. Test Repainting Process

NOTICE: Always test the repainting process on an inconspicuous area prior to full application.
