How to Install the A21CHVA Operator Adapter for Cutler-Hammer Variable Depth Mechanisms

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the Hoffman A21CHVA Operator Adapter with Cutler-Hammer C361 and C371 variable depth operating mechanisms in floor-mounted enclosures with the disconnect on the right flange. Ensure proper function and safety after installation.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Screwdriver, Wrench, Drill, Tap set, Cutting tool

Supplies needed:

Hoffman Mounting Plate (Item 1), Plate Gasket (Item 2), 1/4-20x1/2 Pan Head Screws (4), Slide Arm (Item 4), Shoulder Collar (Item 5), 1/4-20x7/8 Hex Head Screw (1), 1/4 Spring Lockwasher (1), Flat Washers (2), 1/4 Internal Lockwashers (2), 1/4-20 Hex Nuts (2), Hoffman Door Catch (Item 11), 10-32x3/8 Pan Head Screws (2), #10 Internal Lockwashers (2), Cutler-Hammer C361 or C371 Handle Mechanism, Cutler-Hammer Door Hasp, Cutler-Hammer Disconnect Switch or Circuit Breaker, Cutler-Hammer Connecting Rod

  1. Install Mounting Plate and Gasket

Install the mounting plate (Item 1) and plate gasket (Item 2) on the inside of the enclosure, positioning them behind the provided rectangular opening. Secure them in place using the four 1/4-20x1/2 Pan Head screws (Item 3).

  2. Prepare Cutler-Hammer Handle Mechanism

Discard the Cutler-Hammer spring bracket, which is typically installed inside the enclosure flange behind the C-H handle mechanism. When assembling the C-H handle mechanism, omit the cap screw and lockwasher that would normally fit into its bottom hole.

  3. Assemble Handle Mechanism to Mounting Plate

Assemble the Cutler-Hammer handle mechanism to the mounting plate (Item 1) that was installed in Step 1. Ensure the cap screw and lockwasher for the bottom hole are omitted as per Step 2.

  4. Install Slide Arm and Shoulder Collar

Install the slide arm (Item 4) over the defeater part of the C-H handle assembly, ensuring the notch faces the door opening. Insert the smaller diameter end of the shoulder collar (Item 5) through the oval slot in the slide arm. Install the long 1/4-20x7/8 Hex Head screw (Item 6) with the 1/4 Spring lockwasher (Item 7) through the shoulder collar into the bottom mounting hole of the C-H handle mechanism and tighten. Verify that the slide arm and defeater move up and down smoothly. Install the Cutler-Hammer door hasp according to Cutler-Hammer instructions.

  5. Attach Slide Arm to Lock Release Mechanism

Attach the bottom of the slide arm (Item 4) to the offset arm of the lock release mechanism. Use two flat washers (Item 8), two 1/4 Internal lockwashers (Item 9), and two 1/4-20 hex nuts (Item 10). Do not tighten these components until the parts are adjusted in the next step.

  6. Adjust Handle Safety Lock Release Mechanism

Adjust the handle safety lock release mechanism in two places. First, check the factory-installed roller bracket; the door latch should hit the latch stop when the door is closed and latched. Adjust the roller bracket up or down if necessary. Second, adjust the length of the slide arm assembly so that the safety lock on the Cutler-Hammer handle mechanism releases just before the master door is fully latched. Lengthen the slide arm if the safety lock releases too soon, or shorten it if it releases too late. Once adjusted, tighten the nuts from Step 5.

  7. Attach Door Catch

Attach the Hoffman door catch (Item 11) to the tapped spacer on the door using the bottom set of mounting holes. Secure it with two 10-32x3/8 Pan Head screws (Item 12) and two #10 Internal lockwashers (Item 13). The door catch prevents the door from opening when the handle mechanism is in the 'ON' position. Bend the door catch up or down as needed to properly hook onto the door hasp of the Cutler-Hammer handle mechanism.

  8. Prepare Panel for Disconnect Mounting

Drill and tap holes in the panel as indicated in the provided diagrams and Table 1 of the original documentation. Refer to Cutler-Hammer instructions for locating any additional holes required for fuse clips.

  9. Mount Disconnect Switch or Circuit Breaker

Mount the disconnect switch or circuit breaker using Cutler-Hammer instructions and parts. The Cutler-Hammer connecting rod must be cut to the appropriate length as specified in the Cutler-Hammer instructions, referencing Table 2 for depth dimensions.
