Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Heat gun or propane torch
Supplies needed:
Copper compression connectors, Heat shrink tubing
- Select the appropriate connector
Choose a connector that matches the wire size and material. Ensure you do not use a copper connector on aluminum wire.
- Prepare the wire
Strip the wire insulation to the length specified in the tool chart, ensuring not to nick or damage the conductor strands. Clean the wire to remove any contaminants.
- Insert and crimp the connector
Insert the stripped wire into the connector until it stops. Use the crimping tool to crimp the connector, following the color bands or knurl markings as a guide for even spacing.
- Apply heat shrink insulation
Cut the heat shrink tubing to the desired length, allowing for at least 1.5 inches of overlap on the wire insulation. Use a heat gun or propane torch to shrink the tubing, moving from the crimped portion toward the insulated wire.
- Inspect the connection
After crimping and applying heat shrink, inspect the connection for sharp edges, flash, or burrs and remove any imperfections.
