How to Install the OmniSplice Fusion Splice Connector
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the OmniSplice Fusion Splice Connector, ensuring proper handling and assembly for optimal performance.
Estimated time: 45m
Tools needed:
Screwdriver, Wire strippers, Multimeter
Supplies needed:
Mounting screws, Terminal connectors
- Open the connector package
Gently push the tray bottom tab down while lifting the tray lid tab up. Open the blister pack carefully and remove the connector assembly by the handling stick, avoiding contact with the fiber stub end.
- Prepare the fiber
Mark and strip approximately 35mm of buffer and acrylate from the fiber. Clean the bare fiber with lint-free wipes and fiber cleaning solution, following safety precautions.
- Cleave the fiber
Cleave the bare fiber to 10mm. Ensure all acrylate coating has been removed for a successful cleave.
- Insert the fiber into the holder
Place the cleaved fiber into the left-side fiber holder according to the specific splice machine instructions.
- Set up the OmniHolder
Place the OmniHolder on the right side of the splice stage, ensuring it is properly aligned.
- Insert the connector assembly
Place the connector assembly into the OmniHolder with the fiber stub protruding to the left and the handling stick to the right. Ensure the metal portion is flush against the holder.
- Close the wind cover
Close the wind cover of the splice stage. Depending on the machine settings, the splice process may begin automatically or require pressing a start button.
- Complete the splice
After the splice is completed, the machine will provide an estimated insertion loss value. Do not touch the fiber or connector assembly until the tension test is complete.
- Prepare for heating
Gently slide the splice protection sleeve up to the rear of the fiber holder and open the fiber holder.
- Lift the ferrule assembly
Press down on the holder lever to lift the ferrule assembly out of the OmniHolder for ease of handling.
- Align the splice protection sleeve
Grasp the field fiber with your left hand and raise the left side slightly, ensuring the splice protection sleeve slides flush against the metal part of the connector subassembly.
- Heat the splice point
Place the splice point in the heater of the splice machine, keeping the splice protection sleeve centered in the heating area. Close the heater cover.
- Start the heating process
Depending on the machine settings, the heating process may start immediately or require pressing a start button.
- Remove the assembly
Carefully remove the assembly from the heating area once the heating/cooling cycle is complete. Allow a 30-second cool time before assembling the connector.
- Assemble the connector
Slide the rear assembly up, align the side tabs, and snap the front housing together with the rear housing. Ensure the small key feature on APC-style connectors faces up.
- Finalize the installation
Cut off the handling stick to remove it from the dust cap if desired.
