How to Install NSI Copper Compression Connectors

Install and crimp NSI copper compression lugs or splices on concentric, compressed, or compact copper conductors. Select the correct connector size, prepare the conductor properly, and crimp with the approved tool and die set.

Estimated time: 20m

Tools needed:

Wire stripper, Wire brush, Approved compression crimp tool, Approved dies or dieless crimp tool, Cable cutter

Supplies needed:

NSI copper compression connector (lug or splice) sized for the conductor, Copper conductor cable, Optional anti-oxidation cleaning materials if required by site practice

  1. Select the correct connector

Choose the proper NSI lug or splice for the cable size and conductor type before starting. Verify that the connector matches the wire gauge and barrel style required for the installation.

  2. Strip the conductor carefully

Carefully strip the insulation to the specified length so the conductor can be fully inserted into the connector barrel. Do not nick or damage the strands while stripping the wire.

  3. Clean the exposed conductor

Wire brush the stripped portion of the conductor to remove oxide films and contamination. Ensure the exposed copper is clean before insertion to promote a reliable connection.

  4. Insert the conductor fully

Insert the cleaned conductor completely into the connector barrel until it is fully seated and the barrel is filled. Confirm the conductor is straight and fully bottomed out before crimping.

  5. Crimp with the approved tool

Use an approved NSI compression tool and the correct die set for the connector series and wire size. Follow the barrel markings for suggested crimp locations, and make the required number of crimps; long-barrel connectors require twice the crimps shown in the table.

  6. Verify the finished connection

Inspect the crimped connector to confirm the conductor remains fully seated and the crimp is properly formed. Check that the connection is secure and that the selected tool and die matched the connector specifications.
