Molded Junction Box, Length 4 Inch x Width 4 Inch x Depth 2 Inch, Material Polycarbonate, Color GrayHow to Install NSI Copper Compression Connectors
Install NSI copper compression lugs or splices on concentric, compressed, or compact copper conductors. This guide covers stripping, cleaning, inserting, and crimping the conductor using the correct connector and approved tool.
Tools needed:
Wire stripper, Wire brush, Approved compression crimp tool, Optional mechanical crimp tool (NSI M-250 or NSI M-500 for matching cable sizes)
Supplies needed:
Correctly sized NSI copper compression lug or splice connector, Copper conductor cable, Approved dies or dieless crimp tooling as required by the connector series
- Select the correct connector and tool
Choose a lug or splice that matches the cable size and connector series before starting. Verify the connector is approved for concentric, compressed, or compact copper conductors, and confirm the crimp tool and dies match the connector chart. Do not use an undersized or oversized connector.
- Strip the conductor to the proper length
Carefully strip the insulation from the conductor without nicking or damaging the strands. Strip enough insulation so the conductor can be fully inserted into the barrel and completely fill it. Safety warning: damaged strands can reduce conductivity and weaken the connection.
- Clean the stripped conductor
Wire brush the stripped portion of the conductor to remove oxide films and contamination. Make sure the exposed copper is clean and ready for termination before insertion.
- Insert the conductor fully into the barrel
Insert the cleaned conductor completely into the connector barrel until it is fully seated. Verify that the stripped portion fills the barrel and that no bare conductor is left exposed outside the connector.
- Crimp the connector at the marked locations
Crimp the connector using the approved NSI tool and the correct die set for the connector series. Follow the barrel markings for suggested crimp locations, and apply the number of crimps required for the connector type. Long-barrel lugs and splices require twice as many crimps as indicated in the parenthesis on the chart.
- Verify the finished connection
Inspect the crimped connector to confirm the conductor is fully seated and the crimp is properly formed. Check that the connection is secure and that the selected tool, die, and connector size all match the installation chart before energizing or placing the conductor into service.
