How to Install and Crimp NSI Copper Compression Connectors

Install NSI copper compression lugs or splices by preparing the conductor, selecting the correct connector size, and crimping with the approved tool and die set. Follow the strip-length and crimp-location guidance to ensure a secure, code-compliant connection.

Tools needed:

Wire brush, Approved compression crimp tool, Approved dies for the selected connector series, NSI M-250 crimp tool (for 250 MCM Class B & C copper cable), NSI M-500 crimp tool (for 500 MCM Class B & C copper cable), NSI N12ID dieless crimp tool, NSI N1240 tool

Supplies needed:

Correct NSI copper compression lug or splice connector, Copper conductor/cable, Insulation to be stripped from conductor

  1. Select the correct connector

Choose the proper NSI lug or splice connector for the cable size and conductor type. Verify that the connector series and size match the table for the wire gauge or MCM being installed. Use only connectors intended for concentric, compressed, or compact copper conductors.

  2. Strip the conductor to the correct length

Carefully strip the insulation from the conductor without nicking the strands. Strip enough length so the conductor can be fully inserted into the barrel and completely fill it. Safety warning: Do not damage or cut conductor strands during stripping.

  3. Clean the conductor

Wire brush the stripped portion of the conductor to remove oxide films and contamination. Make sure the stripped copper is clean before insertion.

  4. Insert the conductor fully

Insert the stripped conductor completely into the connector barrel. Verify that the conductor is fully seated and that the stripped portion fills the barrel before crimping.

  5. Crimp with the approved tool and die

Use an approved UL-listed crimp tool and the correct die set for the connector series. Follow the barrel markings for the manufacturer’s suggested crimp locations when using NSI N12ID or N1240 tools. Apply the number of crimps specified for the connector; long-barrel lugs and splices require twice the crimps shown in parentheses.

  6. Verify the finished connection

Inspect the crimped connector to confirm the conductor is fully seated, the crimp(s) are made at the correct locations, and the connection is secure. If the cable size is 250 MCM or 500 MCM Class B & C copper cable, use the specified NSI M-250 or M-500 mechanical crimp tool as applicable.
