How to Install NSI Copper Compression Connectors

Install and crimp NSI copper compression lugs or splices on concentric, compressed, or compact copper conductors. This guide covers conductor preparation, connector selection, and proper crimping for a secure electrical connection.

Estimated time: 20m

Tools needed:

Wire stripper, Wire brush, Approved crimp tool or die set, NSI M-250 crimp tool (for 250 MCM Class B & C copper cable), NSI M-500 crimp tool (for 500 MCM Class B & C copper cable), NSI N12ID dieless crimp tool, NSI N1240 tool or compatible Greenlee/Ilsco dies

Supplies needed:

Correct-size NSI copper compression lug or splice connector, Copper conductor cable, Oxide-inhibiting cleaning materials if required by site practice

  1. Select the correct connector

Choose the proper NSI lug or splice connector for the conductor size and application. Verify that the connector series and barrel type match the cable size and the required crimp tool or die set before starting.

  2. Prepare the conductor

Carefully strip the insulation from the conductor without nicking the strands. Strip enough length so the conductor will fully insert into the barrel and completely fill it.

  3. Clean the stripped conductor

Wire brush the stripped portion of the conductor to remove oxide films and contamination. Keep the conductor clean and dry so the connection can be made properly.

  4. Insert the conductor fully

Insert the cleaned conductor completely into the connector barrel. Verify that the stripped portion is fully seated and that no strands are left outside the barrel.

  5. Crimp the connector

Use the approved crimp tool and the barrel markings or chart to crimp at the suggested locations. Follow the required number of crimps for the connector type, and remember that long-barrel lugs and splices require twice as many crimps as shown in the parenthesis.

  6. Verify the finished connection

Inspect the crimped connector to confirm it is secure and properly formed. Check that the conductor remains fully inserted and that the connector matches the cable size and tool requirements before energizing the circuit.
