Install and crimp NSI copper compression lugs or splices on compatible copper conductors. This guide covers selecting the correct connector, preparing the cable, and making the required crimp connections safely.
Estimated time: 15m
Tools needed:
Wire brush, Approved crimp tool for the selected connector size, NSI M-250 or NSI M-500 mechanical crimp tool (as applicable), NSI N12ID dieless crimp tool (optional), NSI N1240 crimp tool (optional)
Supplies needed:
Correct NSI copper compression lug or splice for the conductor size, Compatible concentric, compressed, or compact copper conductor, UL-approved dies for the selected tool, if required
- Select the correct connector
Choose an NSI copper compression lug or splice that matches the conductor size and application. Verify that the connector series and barrel style are appropriate for the cable and that the selected tool/die combination is approved for that connector.
- Prepare the conductor
Carefully strip the insulation from the conductor without nicking the strands. Strip only enough length so the conductor will fully insert into the barrel and fill it completely. Safety warning: avoid damaging strands, since nicked conductors can reduce connection quality and reliability.
- Clean the stripped conductor
Wire brush the stripped portion of the conductor to remove oxide films and contamination. Make sure the exposed copper is clean before insertion.
- Insert the conductor fully
Insert the cleaned conductor completely into the connector barrel. Confirm that the conductor is fully seated and that the stripped portion fills the barrel as intended.
- Crimp the connector
Use the approved crimp tool and die set for the connector series and wire size. Make the required number of crimps at the barrel markings or suggested crimp locations. For long-barrel lugs and splices, make twice the number of crimps indicated in the table.
- Verify the finished connection
Inspect the crimped connector to confirm proper placement, full conductor insertion, and secure compression. Ensure the connector is suitable for the conductor type used and that the finished assembly is ready for service.
