Install and crimp NSI copper compression lugs or splices on compatible copper conductors. This guide covers conductor preparation, connector selection, and proper crimping using approved tools and dies.
Tools needed:
Wire brush, Approved crimp tool, Approved dies (if using a die-type crimp tool), NSI N12ID dieless crimp tool or NSI N1240 tool (optional)
Supplies needed:
NSI copper compression connector or splice sized for the conductor, Compatible concentric, compressed, or compact copper conductor
- Select the correct connector
Choose a lug or splice that matches the cable size and application. Verify that the connector series and barrel style are compatible with the conductor and the crimp tool you plan to use.
- Prepare the conductor
Carefully strip the insulation without nicking the strands. Strip enough length so the conductor will fully insert into the barrel and completely fill it.
- Clean the stripped conductor
Wire brush the stripped portion of the conductor to remove oxide films. Ensure the conductor is clean before insertion.
- Insert the conductor fully
Insert the stripped conductor completely into the connector barrel. Verify that the conductor is fully seated and that no strands are left outside the barrel.
- Crimp the connector
Crimp the connector using an approved UL-listed tool and the correct die set for the connector size. Follow the barrel markings for suggested crimp locations, and make the required number of crimps; long-barrel lugs and splices require twice as many crimps as indicated in the table.
- Verify the finished connection
Inspect the crimped connection to confirm it is secure and properly formed. Make sure the conductor remains fully seated and that the connector is appropriate for the installed cable size.
