How to Install Mersen Medium Voltage Fuse Support or Disconnecting Switch
This guide provides instructions for installing Mersen Type EK/EKO medium voltage fuse supports or disconnecting switches, including mounting, electrical connections, and inserting Type EJ/EJO current-limiting fuse units.

- Prepare and Mount the Fuse Support or Disconnecting Switch
CAUTION: Ensure installation is performed by competent personnel familiar with good safety practices. Determine the correct mounting position: Type EK-1/EKO-1 supports can be vertical or horizontal with the fuse on top. Type EK-3/EKO-3 disconnecting switches must be vertical with the hinge support at the bottom. If mounting indoor units on a flat surface, place 1/2-inch spacers under the base for insulator bolt head clearance. Compare mounting holes with the structure. Attach rigging to the base, not insulators or contacts, during hoisting. Position the unit and ensure the base is supported evenly before tightening mounting bolts to prevent distortion.
- Make Electrical Connections to the Terminals
Clean and brighten all conductors before connecting them to the terminals. Ensure there are no dents or burrs on flat bars. Connect conductors firmly to the terminals. Do not subject the insulators to mechanical or thermal stresses from the conductors. If using bar or pipe connections from buses, provide flexible connectors unless the bus shape inherently eliminates strain from expansion and contraction.
- Assemble Fittings onto the Fuse Unit (for Disconnecting Switches only)
This step applies only to Type EK-3 or EKO-3 fuse disconnecting switches. Slide the appropriate fuse unit fittings onto the ferrules of the Type EJ/EJO fuse unit. For Size DD fuse units, attach the hinge fitting to the bottom ferrule of one tube and the operating eye to the top ferrule of the other tube. Ensure the hinge fitting is at the fuse's indicating target end for visibility. Seat the connecting block firmly in the hinge fitting's slot (for Size DD). Firmly tighten the slotted cap screws on the fittings with a hand screwdriver; avoid excessive force to prevent fuse body damage.
- Insert the Fuse Unit into the Support or Switch
CAUTION: Before inserting or removing a fuse, the circuit must be completely de-energized and grounded for fuse supports (EK-1/EKO-1), or completely open for fuse disconnecting switches (EK-3/EKO-3). Use fuse tongs to grip the fuse unit firmly. For fuse supports, insert the fuse and ensure it is firmly seated in the clip before removing the tongs. For disconnecting switches (C, D, or DD size), insert the point of the hinge fitting behind the hinge bolt, lower the unit until it rests on the bolt, then remove the tongs. Insert a fuse hook into the operating eye and rotate the blade into the closed position.
- Adjust the Fuse Disconnecting Switch (if needed)
If the fuse unit strikes one side of the clip more than the other in a disconnecting switch, loosen the bolts holding the hinge support to the lower insulator. Adjust the hinge support until the upper fuse ferrule enters the clips centrally. Once the correct adjustment is achieved, firmly tighten the hinge support bolts.
