How to Install the 454100P5C SP Series Plug and Receptacle
Installation guide for mounting and wiring the 454100P5C SP series plug and receptacle. Ensure safe and proper installation by following these steps.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Screwdriver, Wire strippers, Multimeter, 3/4" (19 mm) wrench, 24 mm wrench, Crimping tool (Greenlee EK61DL11 or DeWalt 20V MAX with DCE300M2 die)
Supplies needed:
Mounting screws, Terminal connectors, Sealer tape (recommended for threaded connections), Lock washer and nut (for custom installations), Stickers for current and voltage markings
- Verify Power and Ratings
Before installation, disconnect all sources of power to the circuit to eliminate the risk of electrical shock. Verify that the product ratings are appropriate for the application and ensure conductors meet code requirements and are within the wiring terminal capacities noted in Table 3. The ground conductor for CS1000 series devices shall be limited to a maximum size of 1/0 AWG. Conductors should be rated to 90°C or higher. Auxiliary contacts work with 12-14 AWG.
- Prepare Conductors
Select a flexible cable between 2/0 and 777 MCM. Refer to Table 3 for appropriate lug types and strip lengths. If using crimped lugs, ensure they are secured with M12 bolts tightened to approximately 30 ft-lb (40 N.m.). If using threaded lugs, tighten them until the tapered section is securely in solid contact with the terminal. For crimped lugs, apply one crimp with a Greenlee EK61DL11 tool or two crimps with a DeWalt 12-ton tool. Do not crimp past the line on threaded lugs. Use a 24 mm wrench to hold the terminal in place to avoid transmitting torque to the device moldings.
- Wire the Main Conductor
Connect the main conductor to the appropriate terminal. For safety, MELTRIC recommends the following connection sequence: Ground, Neutral, Phase 1, Phase 2, Phase 3.
- Wire the Pilot Contacts
Wire the SP auxiliary/pilot contact leads in series within the power control circuit as shown in the typical pilot circuit wiring diagram.
- Mount the Receptacle or Inlet
If mounting to a panel or accessory, ensure the flat black gasket is installed between the inlet or receptacle and the mounting surface. For custom installations, use watertight seals under the heads of the four mounting bolts and retain with a lock washer and nut. Alternatively, drill and thread four blind holes for #8-32 x 5/8" mounting screws, ensuring sufficient depth for gasket compression. If attaching to the side of an enclosure, position the isolating ring as indicated in Figure 1. Attach the metal angle (if required) to the receptacle or inlet using the supplied screws and gasket, and connect the metal angle to ground. Apply a torque of 17 in-lbs (2 N.m.) to each screw.
- Attach the Handle (if applicable)
Insert the cable through the cable gland and handle before tightening the phase conductor. Assemble the handle with the screws and gasket supplied (use short screws for inlets, long screws for receptacles) and tighten the cable gland with an appropriate tool. MELTRIC threaded lugs are required for use with handles.
- Assemble the Plug/Inlet Cap
Attach the cap to the plug/inlet by retaining the end of the chain under one of the mounting screws.
- Apply Markings
Apply the supplied stickers to indicate the current and voltage of the main circuit on or adjacent to the product so they can easily be seen.
- Verify Watertightness
To achieve rated IP66/IP67 watertightness, ensure the plug and receptacle are mated. When disconnected, the receptacle cap must be fully inserted with the slot aligned with the protruding button, and the plug cap must be pressed firmly into place. Use sealer tape on threaded connections on plug handles or at the junction box if necessary.
