How to Install the PS1000 Standby Battery Backup/Power Supply
Installation guide for mounting and wiring the PS1000 standby battery backup/power supply.
Estimated time: 45m
Tools needed:
Screwdriver, Wire strippers, Multimeter, Conduit Bender
Supplies needed:
Mounting screws (#10), Wire connectors, 18 AWG wire, 22 AWG to 18 AWG wire, Conduit
- Mount the enclosure
Use the power supply enclosure as a template to mark the mounting hole locations on a sturdy vertical surface. Mount the enclosure using appropriate hardware (e.g., #10 screws), ensuring it can support the weight of the unit and withstand external stresses. Install electrical conduit at this time, terminating it at the designated knockouts for AC input and DC output.
- Wire the AC input and DC output
Ensure AC power is OFF. Route the 120/240 VAC input conductors through the upper right knockouts and the 24 VDC or 12 VDC output conductors through the top or middle left knockouts. Use 18 AWG wire for power connections and 22-18 AWG for signaling outputs. Keep power-limited and non-power-limited wiring segregated. Strip no more than 0.25 inch of insulation from wire ends and insert them into the appropriate terminal blocks, observing correct polarity for the DC output ('-DC+').
- Install and connect batteries
Place the two 12V batteries at the bottom of the enclosure. Connect the batteries in series using the provided yellow jumper wire between the positive terminal of the first battery and the negative terminal of the second battery. Connect the battery wires to the '-BAT+' terminal block on the PC board, observing correct polarity. Connect the black (negative) wire to the first battery's negative terminal and the red (positive) wire to the second battery's positive terminal.
- Set the output voltage
Configure the output voltage by setting the DIP switches according to Table 1. For 12 VDC output, set DIP switches 1 & 2 to ON and 3 & 4 to OFF. For 24 VDC output, set DIP switches 1 & 2 to OFF and 3 & 4 to ON.
- Verify power and indicators
After completing wiring and setting the voltage, close the cabinet door. Verify that the green LED (indicating AC power) and the red LED (indicating DC power) illuminate. If batteries are not used (for access control applications), loss of AC will result in loss of output voltage.
- Configure supervised outputs (if applicable)
For supervised systems, connect the 'AC FAIL' terminal to report AC loss (indicated in approximately 5 minutes) and the 'BAT FAIL' terminal to report low or no battery conditions (indicated in approximately 20 seconds). Refer to the documentation for relay ratings.
