How to Install the 304GCX-024-CN-R SelecTone Amplified Speaker
Installation guide for mounting and wiring the 304GCX-024-CN-R SelecTone amplified speaker. Ensure proper sound distribution and electrical connections for safe operation.
Estimated time: 45m
Tools needed:
Screwdriver, Wire strippers, Drill, Wrench (if mounting on metal surface)
Supplies needed:
Mounting screws (#10 x 1" wood screws or #10 screws with lockwashers and nuts for metal surfaces), Conduit fittings, Wire connectors, 1/2" conduit plug (if needed)
- Unpack and Inspect
Carefully unpack the 304GCX-024-CN-R SelecTone amplified speaker and inspect it for any signs of damage that may have occurred during transit. If damage is found, file a claim with the carrier immediately.
- Select Mounting Location and Orientation
Choose a mounting location that allows for optimal sound distribution. Mount the unit so the speaker projector is pointed horizontally or slightly downward to prevent water or debris accumulation. Ensure the front of the speaker is clear of obstructions. For Models 304GCX and 314GCX, do not use the 7/8” knockout for concealed conduit mounting to maintain hazardous location rating.
- Mount the Speaker
For flat surface mounting: Remove and retain the cover screws, then remove the cover. Place the rear of the housing against the mounting surface and use the mounting holes as a template to mark drill positions. Secure the unit using appropriate screws (#10 x 1" wood screws for wood, or #10 screws with lockwashers and nuts for metal). For concealed conduit mounting (Models 304GC and 314GC only): Remove the cover, remove the 7/8" knockout, install conduit connection, and then proceed with marking and securing the unit as described for flat surface mounting. Install 1/2” conduit plugs in any unused bottom entryways.
- Reposition Speaker Projector (if necessary)
If needed, adjust the speaker projector for desired sound coverage. Loosen the collar nut, move the projector to the desired position, and then tighten the collar nut.
- Make Electrical Connections
Ensure all power circuits are de-energized before making connections. Route wires through the 1/2" threaded openings in accordance with national and local electrical codes. Use 12 to 18 AWG wire and strip no more than 0.25 inch of insulation. Connect the positive (+) and negative (-) power leads to the appropriate terminals on the connector plug, ensuring each wire of the same polarity is terminated independently for electrical supervision. Plug the connector into the receptacle on the printed circuit board.
- Install Tone Card or Speaker Connector Card
If using a tone card, plug the desired tone card into the provided socket. If using a speaker connector card (e.g., AM25CK, AM70CK), route the audio signal leads and connect them to the audio output of the fire alarm panel and the next unit or end-of-line device as per the connector card's manual. Plug the connector card into its socket.
- Reinstall Housing Cover
Ensure the neoprene rubber cover gasket is properly seated in the housing groove. Reinstall the housing cover and ensure it is tightly secured, especially for Models 304GCX and 314GCX, to maintain explosion hazard suitability.
- Test the System and Adjust Volume
After installation, test the system to verify satisfactory operation. If the volume is too loud, remove the housing cover and use a slotted screwdriver to adjust the internal volume control to the desired loudness. Reinstall the housing cover securely.
- Establish Periodic Testing and Documentation
Establish a program for periodic testing of the device in accordance with NFPA 72, local fire codes, and the authority having jurisdiction. Provide a copy of these installation instructions to all personnel responsible for operation, testing, and maintenance.
