How to Crimp Uninsulated STA-KON® Terminals with WT3185 Crimper

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for safely and effectively crimping uninsulated STA-KON® terminals onto electrical cables using the WT3185 adjustable crimper, including initial tool setup and verification procedures.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

WT3185 Adjustable Crimper, Wire strippers, Pin gauge, Measuring tape or ruler

Supplies needed:

Uninsulated STA-KON® Terminals, Electrical cable (8 GA to 250 MCM)

  1. Observe Safety Warnings

WARNING: HANDLES ARE NON-INSULATING. DO NOT CRIMP ON ENERGIZED WIRES. Always ensure the wires are de-energized before beginning any crimping operation. Keep fingers and other body parts clear of the die nest during operation of the tool to prevent injury from the SHURE-STAKE® Full Stroke Compelling Mechanism.

  2. Check Handle Adjustment

Lay the WT3185 crimper on a flat surface. Open the handles fully and then release them, allowing the tool to close under its own weight. Measure the handle spread distance at the inner surface of the handle tips. The tool is properly adjusted if this distance is 14 inches ± 1/2 inch.

  3. Adjust Handle Spread (if necessary)

If the handle spread is not within the specified range (14 inches ± 1/2 inch), adjust it. Turn the adjustment screw clockwise to increase the handle spread or counterclockwise to decrease it until the correct measurement is achieved.

  4. Prepare the Cable

Strip the insulation from the end of the electrical cable. Ensure that the cable strands are not cut or nicked during the stripping process. The length of the stripped portion should match the barrel length of the terminal you intend to crimp.

  5. Select Tool Side and Adjust Indenter

Identify the correct side of the crimper tool based on the type of connector and the cable gauge you are using. Turn the adjusting wheel until the pointer slot aligns with the selected cable size line. Ensure the wheel is in a positive detented position for accurate crimping.

  6. Insert Cable into Connector

Take the uninsulated STA-KON® terminal and insert the stripped end of the cable fully into the connector barrel until it bottoms out. Ensure all cable strands are contained within the terminal barrel.

  7. Position Connector in Crimper

Carefully place the connector into the crimper tool, positioning it between the die nest and the indenter. Ensure the connector is seated properly and securely within the tool's crimping area.

  8. Crimp the Connector

Close the handles of the WT3185 crimper firmly to apply the crimp. Refer to the specific instructions provided with your STA-KON® connectors for the required number of crimps to ensure a secure and reliable connection. Apply as many crimps as specified.

  9. Perform Gauging Procedure (Maintenance)

For tool maintenance and verification, close the tool jaws until they bottom. Select the appropriate side of the tool (Tubular or Brazed) and move the indenter until the pointer slot aligns with the selected cable size (e.g., 6 GA for brazed, 2/0 for tubular). Gauge the crimping area with a suitable pin gauge. The gauge diameter must fall within .405 ±.010 for 2/0 tubular and .215 ±.010 for 6 GA brazed products.
