Overview

ABB Installation Products WMG-PC6 is a stainless steel wire mesh grip designed for secure retention of 3/4" cord fittings. This UL and CSA certified component ensures reliable performance in industrial and commercial applications where cable strain relief and vibration resistance are critical. The grip accommodates a wire range of 0.187 to 0.250 inches, providing consistent clamping force without damaging conductor insulation. The stainless steel construction delivers corrosion resistance and long service life in harsh environments, including outdoor installations, manufacturing floors, and utility service points. Unlike plastic strain relief bushings, the wire mesh design distributes clamping pressure evenly, reducing the risk of cable pull-out or insulation degradation over time. Common applications include machine tool wiring, control panel assemblies, and portable equipment cords where NEC or CEC compliance is required. The WMG-PC6 fits standard 3/4" cord fittings and is compatible with common cable types such as SJO, SOOW, and THHN/THWN conductors. Installation requires no special tools—simply insert the cable and compress the mesh grip into the fitting using standard crimping or compression methods.

How to Assemble a Wire Mesh Grip Strain Relief Connector

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for assembling a wire mesh grip onto a cable or cord, ensuring proper strain relief for WMG-PC series connectors.

Estimated time: 15m

Tools needed:

Flat nose pliers (optional)

Supplies needed:

Wire mesh grip, Cord or cable, Compression gland nut, Bushing, Connector body, Original retaining ring (if present)

  1. Disassemble Connector and Remove Retaining Ring

Disassemble the cord connector and remove the original retaining ring. If a replacement gland nut is supplied with the grip, also remove the original gland nut from the connector.

  2. Prepare Cord and Slide Gland Nut

Cut the end of the cord square. Slide the compression gland nut onto the cord.

  3. Compress and Slide Wire Mesh Grip

Compress the wire mesh grip and slide it onto the cable or cord. If installing on cords of maximum diameter, slightly preform the wire mesh loops using flat nose pliers to make them round.

  4. Slide Bushing onto Cord

Slide the bushing onto the cord.

  5. Secure Connector Body (Optional)

If applicable, secure the connector body to the enclosure for threaded hub applications. For knockout applications, the remaining assembly can be completed before installing the connector to the enclosure.

  6. Insert Cord into Connector Body

Insert the cord through the connector body until the conductors reach the desired working length. Note: The cord jacket may need to be stripped back to pass through the body in some installations.

  7. Slide Bushing into Connector Body

Slide the bushing into the connector body.

  8. Position Wire Mesh Grip

Slide the wire mesh grip along the cord until it lays flat against the bushing.

  9. Tighten Gland Nut and Secure Mesh

Slide the compression gland nut along the mesh and tighten it onto the connector body. Remove all slack from the mesh by smoothing it out along the cord to ensure proper strain relief.
