How to Assemble the WMG-PC21 Wire Mesh Grip Strain Relief Connector
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for assembling the WMG-PC21 wire mesh grip strain relief connector, ensuring proper installation and cable securement for strain relief applications.
Estimated time: 20m
Tools needed:
Flat nose pliers
Supplies needed:
Cord or cable, Replacement compression gland nut, Wire mesh grip, Bushing, Connector body, Enclosure (if applicable)
- Disassemble the Original Connector
Remove the original retaining ring and gland nut from the connector body. The WMG-PC21 is supplied with a replacement gland nut, so ensure both the original retaining ring and gland nut are removed. Refer to Figure 1 in the documentation for visual guidance.
- Prepare the Cord and Gland Nut
Cut the end of the cord squarely to ensure a clean insertion. Slide the replacement compression gland nut, which is supplied with the WMG-PC21, onto the cord. Refer to Figure 4 in the documentation.
- Install the Wire Mesh Grip
Compress the wire mesh grip and carefully slide it onto the cable or cord. If you are installing on a cord of maximum diameter for the WMG-PC21 (1.625-1.750 inches), slightly preform the wire mesh by carefully forming each loop round using flat nose pliers, as shown in Figure 3.
- Position the Bushing
Slide the bushing onto the cord, ensuring it is positioned after the wire mesh grip. Refer to Figure 4 in the documentation for the correct order of components.
- Secure the Connector Body
If you are working with a threaded hub application, secure the connector body to the enclosure at this stage. For knockout applications, the entire assembly can be completed before installing it into the enclosure.
- Insert Cord into Connector Body
Carefully insert the cord through the connector body until the conductors reach the desired working length. Note that in some installations, the cord jacket may need to be stripped back slightly to allow it to pass through the body. Refer to Figure 4.
- Seat Bushing and Mesh
Slide the bushing fully into the connector body, ensuring it is properly seated. Then, slide the wire mesh along the cord so that it lays flat and evenly against the bushing.
- Tighten the Compression Gland Nut
Slide the compression gland nut along the mesh and firmly tighten it onto the connector body. As you tighten, remove all slack from the mesh by smoothing it out along the cord to ensure effective strain relief and a secure connection.
