How to Assemble a Wire Mesh Grip Strain Relief Connector
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for assembling a wire mesh grip strain relief connector, ensuring proper cable securement and strain relief for electrical cords.
Estimated time: 15m
Tools needed:
Flat nose pliers, Wire strippers (if needed)
Supplies needed:
Electrical cord, Wire mesh grip, Compression gland nut, Bushing, Connector body, Retaining ring (if applicable), Enclosure (if applicable)
- Disassemble Original Connector Components
Disassemble and remove the original retaining ring from the connector. If a replacement gland nut is supplied with the grip, also remove the original gland nut from the connector.
- Prepare the Cord and Wire Mesh Grip
Cut the electrical cord squarely. Slide the compression gland nut onto the cord. Compress the wire mesh grip and slide it onto the cable. For cords of maximum diameter, carefully preform the wire mesh loops using flat nose pliers to round them out.
- Install Bushing and Secure Connector Body
Slide the bushing onto the cord. Secure the connector body to the enclosure if using threaded hub applications. For knockout applications, the entire assembly can be completed before installing it to the enclosure.
- Route Cord and Position Components
Insert the cord through the connector body to achieve the desired working length for the conductors. Slide the bushing into the connector body. Then, slide the wire mesh grip along the cord until it lays flat against the bushing. Note: The cord jacket may need to be stripped back to pass through the body in some installations.
- Finalize and Tighten Assembly
Slide the compression gland nut along the wire mesh grip and tighten it onto the connector body. Remove any slack from the wire mesh by smoothing it out along the cord to ensure a secure fit.
