How to Install the STX150-550S Cable Fitting

Instructions for installing the STX150-550S Star Teck™ cable fitting with integral seal.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

Hacksaw, Screwdriver

Supplies needed:

Sealing compound (SC4-KIT-1 or SC65), Fiber damming material (if using SC4-KIT-1)

  1. Prepare the cable

Determine the required working length of the conductors. Remove a portion of the outer jacket to expose the armor. Cut the armor using a hacksaw, being careful not to nick the conductor insulation. Trim the outer jacket to the strip length specified in the product table.

  2. Feed cable through gland nut

Feed the cable through the gland nut opening and push until the cable armor contacts the end stop.

  3. Tighten gland nut

Tighten the gland nut until an appropriate seal is obtained or to the maximum torque specified in the table. Ensure the bushing and collar ring seal evenly around the cable's outer jacket and are flush with the gland nut face. Keep the cable centered for an optimal seal.

  4. Disassemble fitting components

Loosen the union to disassemble the hub from the body sub-assembly. Unscrew the sealing chamber from the body sub-assembly.

  5. Prepare conductors

Trim the inner jacket to a length of 1/8"-3/8" to expose the conductor bundle. For shielded data cables, remove the outer shield, taking care not to damage inner shields, and remove filler materials without disturbing inner shields.

  6. Apply sealing compound

If using liquid sealing compound (SC4-KIT-1), pack fiber damming material into voids between conductors and body, and spread grounding conductor strands if applicable. Mix the compound according to package instructions and fill the sealing chamber. For fittings STX300-478 and larger, fill halfway, wait 2 hours, then fill to the top. If using putty-type sealing compound (SC65), mix the two parts until uniform. Apply a portion between insulated conductors and around uninsulated grounding conductor strands. Build up compound to fill the sealing chamber.

  7. Reassemble and seal

Screw the sealing chamber back onto the body sub-assembly until fully seated. Slide the sealing chamber onto the cable and compound. Screw the sealing chamber to the body sub-assembly until fully seated. Remove any excess compound with a damp cloth. For putty compound, fill the throat area of the sealing chamber and pack tightly around conductors. Allow compound to set for approximately one hour.

  8. Mount hub

Mount the hub in the desired location. Once the sealing compound is solidified, place the encapsulated assembly into the hub and secure by tightening the union until metal-to-metal contact is achieved.
