Overview
- Working with engineers from the petrochemical, oil and gas industries, Thomas & Betts then introduced the STAR TECK XP fitting.
- With an easy-to-fill, integral sealing chamber and a disconnectable design requiring minimal cable preparation, this fitting became the benchmark for ease of installation in hazardous environments.
- A line of liquid and putty sealants was also developed at the same time, eliminating the need for the cement sealants used up to this point.
- Vibration-resistant design for reliable long-term performance
- Compact 1-inch size for tight-space applications

How to Install the STX100-468 Star Teck Cable Fitting
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the proper installation and sealing of the STX100-468 Star Teck cable fitting, suitable for power cables in hazardous locations. Ensure all safety precautions are followed.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Hacksaw, Wire strippers, Wrench or suitable tightening tool, Damp cloth
Supplies needed:
STX100-468 Cable Fitting, Cable (compatible with STX100-468), SC4-KIT-1 LIQUID SEALANT, Fiber damming material, Gloves and other proper PPE
- De-energize Circuits and Prepare Cable Armor
WARNING: Risk of electrical shock. Before installing or performing maintenance, verify that all circuits are de-energized. Determine the working length of conductors required inside the enclosure. Remove a portion of the outer jacket to expose the armor, then cut the armor using a hacksaw. CAUTION: Do not nick or cut the conductor insulation.
- Adjust Outer Jacket Strip Length
Trim the outer jacket to adjust the exposed armor strip length. For the STX100-468, the range over the jacket is 1.025-1.205 inches and the range over the armor is 0.905-1.125 inches.
- Feed Cable and Tighten Gland Nut
Feed the prepared cable through the gland nut opening and push until the cable armor hits the end stop. Tighten the gland nut until you obtain an appropriate seal or to the maximum torque of 600 in-lbs. Ensure the bushing and collar ring seal evenly around the cable’s outer jacket and flush with the gland nut face, and that the cable remains centered for an optimal seal.
- Disassemble Hub and Sealing Chamber
Disassemble the hub from the body sub-assembly by loosening the union. Unscrew the sealing chamber from the body sub-assembly.
- Prepare Conductor Bundle
Trim the inner jacket to a length of 1/8”-3/8” to expose the conductor bundle. Note: For shielded data cables, refer to Section 2 of the original documentation for additional preparation steps before proceeding with sealing.
- Pack Fiber Damming Material
Tightly pack the fiber damming material into all voids between the conductors and the body. Spread strands of any uninsulated grounding conductor, where applicable.
- Re-attach Sealing Chamber
Screw the sealing chamber back onto the body sub-assembly until it completely seats on the body.
- Mix and Dispense Liquid Sealing Compound (SC4-KIT-1)
Position the cable/fitting into a vertical position. Mix the SC4-KIT-1 liquid sealing compound following the instructions provided on the compound package. Dispense the sealing compound into the end of the sealing chamber until the level of compound stabilizes and fills to the top. For STX100-468, fill to the top in one go.
- Clean Excess Compound
CAUTION: REMOVE ALL EXCESS COMPOUND MATERIAL FROM OUTSIDE OF THE SEALING CHAMBER WITH A DAMP CLOTH. DO NOT USE ABRASIVE CLEANERS SUCH AS POWDER CLEANERS, SAND PAPER, STEEL WOOL, OR WIRE BRUSH THAT MAY DAMAGE THE FLAME PATH.
- Mount Hub and Secure Assembly
Mount the hub in the desired location. When the sealing compound is solidified (after approximately 1 hour), place the encapsulated assembly into the hub and secure it in position by tightening the union until it bottoms (metal to metal contact).
