Overview
- Working with engineers from the petrochemical, oil and gas industries, Thomas & Betts then introduced the STAR TECK XP fitting.
- With an easy-to-fill, integral sealing chamber and a disconnectable design requiring minimal cable preparation, this fitting became the benchmark for ease of installation in hazardous environments.
- A line of liquid and putty sealants was also developed at the same time, eliminating the need for the cement sealants used up to this point.
- Made in the USA
- Designed for secure industrial connections

Supplies needed:
STX050-464 Cable Fitting, Cable, SC4-KIT-1 LIQUID SEALANT (1 unit), Fiber damming material
- Ensure Electrical Safety
WARNING: Before beginning installation or performing maintenance, verify that all circuits are de-energized to prevent the risk of electrical shock. Ensure the product is installed by a qualified electrician in accordance with national and local electrical codes.
- Prepare the Cable Armor
Determine the required working length of conductors inside the enclosure. Carefully remove a portion of the outer jacket to expose the cable armor. Use a hacksaw to cut the armor to the specified strip length (0.600-0.760 inches for outer jacket, 0.490-0.680 inches for armor for STX050-464), taking care not to nick or cut the conductor insulation. Trim the outer jacket to adjust the exposed armor strip length as indicated.
- Secure Cable into Gland Nut
Feed the prepared cable through the gland nut opening. Push the cable until its armor firmly hits the end stop. Tighten the gland nut until an appropriate seal is obtained or to the maximum torque of 300 in-lbs for the STX050-464. Ensure the bushing and collar ring seal evenly around the cable's outer jacket and are flush with the gland nut face, keeping the cable centered for an optimal seal.
- Disassemble Fitting and Prepare Conductors
Disassemble the hub from the body sub-assembly by loosening the union. Unscrew the sealing chamber from the body sub-assembly. Trim the inner jacket to a length of 1/8 to 3/8 inches to expose the conductor bundle. For shielded data cables, additionally remove the outer (overall) shield from the conductor bundle and any filler materials, being careful not to nick or damage inner shields.
- Apply Liquid Sealing Compound (SC4-KIT-1)
Pack the fiber damming material tightly into all voids between conductors and the body. Spread strands of any uninsulated grounding conductor if applicable. Screw the sealing chamber back onto the body sub-assembly until it completely seats. Position the cable and fitting vertically. Mix the SC4-KIT-1 liquid sealing compound according to its package instructions. Dispense the compound into the sealing chamber until the level stabilizes at the top. For STX050-464, fill to the top in one go. CAUTION: Remove all excess compound material from outside the sealing chamber with a damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners.
- Final Assembly
Allow the sealing compound to solidify for approximately 1 hour. Once solidified, mount the hub in the desired location. Place the encapsulated assembly into the hub and secure it in position by tightening the union until it bottoms (metal-to-metal contact).
