How to Install the STEX Series Cable Fitting

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing STEX Series cable fittings, including cable preparation, fitting assembly, and sealing with liquid compound. Ensure all circuits are de-energized before starting.

Supplies needed:

STEX Series cable fitting, Cable (power or shielded data), SC4-KIT-1 LIQUID SEALANT, Fiber damming material, Damp cloth, Gloves (recommended)

  1. Prepare the Cable

    Determine the working length of conductors required inside the enclosure or device. Remove a portion of the outer jacket to expose the armor, then cut the armor using a hacksaw. CAUTION: Do not nick or cut the conductor insulation during this process.

  2. Trim Outer Jacket and Check Armor Stop

    Trim the outer jacket to expose the armor strip length as indicated in the product table for your specific STEX model (e.g., 1-1/2 inches for STEX150). Test the inner conductor bundle by inserting the conductor ends into the armor stop opening. If the inner conductor bundle will not pass through the Armor Stop, unscrew and discard the Armor Stop.

  3. Feed Cable and Tighten Gland Nut

    Feed the cable through the gland nut opening and push until the cable armor hits the Armor Stop (if present). Tighten the gland nut until you obtain an appropriate seal or to the maximum torque specified in the product table (e.g., 1200 IN-LBS for STEX150). Ensure the bushing and collar ring seal evenly around the cable’s outer jacket and are flush with the gland nut face. Ensure the cable remains centered to obtain an optimal seal.

  4. Disassemble Fitting and Prepare for Sealing

    Disassemble the hub from the body sub-assembly by loosening the union. Unscrew the sealing chamber from the body sub-assembly. If the Removable Armor Stop was not removed in Step 2, unscrew and discard it now. Trim the inner jacket to a length of 1/8”-3/8” to expose the conductor bundle. (Note: For shielded data cables, refer to Section 2 of the original documentation for additional preparation steps before proceeding).

  5. Pack Fiber Damming Material and Reassemble Sealing Chamber

    Pack the fiber damming material tightly into all voids between the conductors and the body. Spread the strands of the uninsulated grounding conductor, where applicable. Screw the sealing chamber back onto the body subassembly until it completely seats on the body.

  6. Mix and Dispense Liquid Sealing Compound

    Position the cable/fitting into a vertical position. Mix the SC4-KIT-1 liquid sealing compound following the instructions provided on its package. Dispense the sealing compound into the end of the sealing chamber until the level of compound stabilizes and fills to the top (for STEX150 and smaller fittings). CAUTION: Remove all excess compound material from outside of the sealing chamber with a damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners such as powder cleaners, sandpaper, steel wool, or a wire brush that may damage the flame path.

  7. Mount Hub and Secure Encapsulated Assembly

    Mount the hub in the desired location. When the sealing compound is solidified (after approximately 1 hour), place the encapsulated assembly into the hub. Secure the assembly in position by tightening the union until it bottoms (metal to metal contact).
