This guide provides step-by-step instructions for safely installing a heat-shrink compression splice kit, including cable preparation, connector crimping, and heat-shrink application. Installation should be performed by a qualified electrician in accordance with national and local electrical codes.
Estimated time: 30m
Tools needed:
Wire brush, Gas torch, Crimping tool with recommended die, Safety glasses, Protective gloves
Supplies needed:
Heat-shrink tubing, Compression connector, Oxide inhibitor (for aluminum conductors), Cable
- Strip Cable Insulation
WARNING: Risk of electrical shock. Disconnect all power before beginning installation. Strip both ends of the cable insulation to a length equal to half the connector's length plus 1/4 inch. Refer to Figure 1 in the documentation for visual guidance.
- Clean Cable Insulation
Thoroughly clean the stripped cable insulation on both ends to ensure proper adhesion and connection.
- Position Heat-Shrink Tubing
Carefully slide the heat-shrink tubing over one of the clean cable ends. Ensure the tubing is protected from possible damage by the conductor strands as it passes over the cable end. Refer to Figure 2 in the documentation.
- Prepare Conductor Strands
Wire brush the conductor strands to remove any oxidation. If working with aluminum conductors, apply an oxide inhibitor and thoroughly wire brush it into the strands.
- Install and Crimp Connector
Install the compression connector onto the prepared conductor ends. Crimp the connector using the recommended die size indicated on the connector itself. After crimping, clean and deburr the connector if required. Refer to Figure 3 in the documentation.
- Shrink Heat-Shrink Tubing
Center the heat-shrink tubing over the crimped splice and hold it in position. Using a gas torch, apply the outer 3-4 inch tip of the flame to the heat-shrinkable material with a rapid, brushing motion. Keep the flame constantly moving to prevent scorching. Begin shrinking at the center of the tube, applying uniform heat around all sides. Once the center is shrunk, work the torch towards one end, then to the opposite end, until the entire tube is completely shrunk. Refer to Figure 4 in the documentation. Always follow manufacturer's safety precautions for gas torches and check equipment for leaks prior to use.
- Inspect and Cool Splice
Inspect the completed splice. A properly installed heat-shrink tube will appear smooth, conform tightly to the connection, and show visible adhesive at both ends. Reheat any flat spots or wrinkles as needed. Allow the entire installation to cool completely before touching, moving, or placing it into service.
