How to Install the PA50-BB Pin Adapter for Aluminum Conductors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for safely installing the PA50-BB Pin Adapter, designed to reliably terminate 500 MCM stranded aluminum conductors into mechanical connectors.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimping tool (with T&B 106H or Burndy 300 dies), Screwdriver, Torque wrench

Supplies needed:

PA50-BB Pin Adapter, 500 MCM Stranded Aluminum Conductor, Mechanical connector (Al-Cu rated or suitable for copper), Mated insulating cover (supplied with adapter)

  1. Disconnect Power and Select Adapter

WARNING: Disconnect all power to the electrical equipment before proceeding to prevent risk of shock. Select the PA50-BB Pin Adapter, ensuring it is marked for 500 MCM aluminum wire size.

  2. Verify Compatibility and Prepare Cable Routing

Check the copper pig-tail length against the equipment connector to ensure sufficient contact with the pressure plate or set screw, with the mated insulating cover in place. Verify the diameter of the mated insulating cover to ensure no interference when installed. Confirm that using the Pin Adapter will not reduce the minimum wire bending space required by the National Electrical Code. Bend the 500 MCM aluminum cable to fit into the equipment before installing the Pin Adapter, checking wire bending space from the adapter rear to the nearest obstruction.

  3. Prepare Aluminum Conductor for Crimp

Strip the insulation from the 500 MCM aluminum conductor to a length of 1.375 inches, ensuring not to nick or ring the conductor strands. Thoroughly scratch brush the stripped portion of the aluminum conductor to remove any oxide film.

  4. Crimp the Pin Adapter to the Conductor

Insert the prepared aluminum conductor fully into the compression barrel of the PA50-BB Pin Adapter. Using a crimping tool with the appropriate die (e.g., T&B 106H or Burndy 300), make the required number of crimps between the knurl or ink marks. Compress from the base of the socket toward the cable using circumferential or hex dies. Remove any flash and excess inhibitor.

  5. Install Insulating Cover and Final Connection

After crimping, slip the mated insulating cover completely over the compression barrel of the Pin Adapter, ensuring it is fully seated to maintain minimum electrical spacing. Insert the copper pig-tail fully into the mechanical connector body of the electrical equipment. Tighten the set screw to the equipment manufacturer’s recommended torque. If no specific torque is provided, tighten to 300 inch-lbs.
