Molded Junction Box, Length 4 Inch x Width 4 Inch x Depth 2 Inch, Material Polycarbonate, Color GrayHow to Install the PA31 Pin Adapter
This guide provides detailed instructions for installing the PA31 Pin Adapter, which reliably terminates 3/0 stranded aluminum conductors with a 1/0 copper pig-tail into mechanical connectors. Follow these steps to ensure proper electrical connection and compliance with safety standards.
Estimated time: 30m
Tools needed:
Compression tool, Crimping dies (T&B 76 or Burndy 324 for PA31), Wire brush, Screwdriver, Wrench
Supplies needed:
PA31 Pin Adapter, 3/0 stranded aluminum conductor, Insulating cover (supplied with adapter), Mechanical connector (Al-Cu listed or suitable for aluminum wire)
- Ensure Safety and Select Adapter
WARNING: Risk of shock, disconnect power before installation. Select the PA31 Pin Adapter, which is marked for 3/0 aluminum wire size to be terminated with a 1/0 copper pig-tail. Ensure the mechanical connector in your electrical equipment is listed Al-Cu or suitable for aluminum wire.
- Verify Compatibility and Space
Check the copper pig-tail length against the equipment connector to ensure sufficient contact with the pressure plate or set screw, with the mated insulating cover in place. Verify the diameter of the mated insulating cover to assure no interference. Bend the aluminum cable to fit in the equipment before installing the Pin Adapter, ensuring the use of the adapter will not reduce the minimum wire bending space required by Table 312.6(A) of the National Electrical Code. CAUTION: This adaptor is to be used only in accordance with the limitations of clearance and bending radii as specified in these instructions. Ensure there is adequate clearance.
- Prepare Aluminum Conductor
Strip the insulation from the 3/0 aluminum conductor to the length of the compression barrel (1.250 inches for PA31, as per 'A' column in the table) to permit full insertion of the wire. Do not nick or ring the conductor strands. Thoroughly scratch brush the stripped aluminum conductor to remove oxide film before installation.
- Crimp Aluminum Conductor to Adapter
Insert the stripped 3/0 aluminum conductor all the way into the compression barrel of the PA31 Pin Adapter. Select the appropriate compression tool and dies (T&B 76 or Burndy 324 for PA31). Make the required number of crimps, ensuring overlap crimps are made between knurl or ink marks, or multiple crimps are made adjacent to each other between knurl or ink marks. Compress from the base of the socket toward the cable. Remove any flash and excess inhibitor after crimping.
- Secure Insulating Cover
After installing the Pin Adapter on the conductor, slip the insulating cover completely over the compression barrel. Ensure the cover is fully seated. Use of the insulating cover assures that minimum electrical spacing will not be violated. CAUTION: Do not install the Pin Adapter in opposite holes if mated insulating covers are closer together than shown. Spacing must be more than 1/4 inch for 300V or less and more than 1/2 inch for 301-600V.
- Connect Copper Pig-Tail to Equipment
Insert the copper pig-tail fully into the mechanical connector body of the electrical equipment. Tighten the set screw to the equipment manufacturer’s recommended torque. If no torque recommendation is provided, tighten to 200 inch-lbs as specified in the 'RECOMMENDED TIGHTENING TORQUE' table for PA31 (WRENCH column).
