Molded Junction Box, Length 4 Inch x Width 4 Inch x Depth 2 Inch, Material Polycarbonate, Color GrayHow to Install a Pin Adapter (Type PA) for Aluminum Conductors
This guide provides detailed instructions for safely installing a Pin Adapter (Type PA) to reliably terminate stranded aluminum conductors into mechanical connectors.
Estimated time: 30m
Tools needed:
Wire brush, Crimping tool, Appropriate dies (T&B or Burndy), Screwdriver, Wrench
Supplies needed:
Pin Adapter (Type PA), Stranded aluminum conductor, Mated insulating cover, Mechanical equipment connector
- Disconnect Power
WARNING: Disconnect all power to the electrical equipment before beginning installation to prevent risk of shock.
- Select Pin Adapter and Verify Compatibility
Select the Pin Adapter (e.g., PA30) that matches the aluminum wire size to be terminated. Verify that the copper pig-tail length, mated insulating cover diameter, and wire bending space are compatible with the equipment connector and meet National Electrical Code requirements. Ensure spacing is more than 1/4" for 300V or less, or 1/2" for 301-600V.
- Prepare Aluminum Conductor
Bend the aluminum cable to fit the equipment before installing the Pin Adapter. Strip the insulation from the aluminum conductor to the length of the compression barrel (refer to column 'A' in the specification table). Do not nick or ring the conductor strands. Thoroughly scratch brush the stripped aluminum conductor to remove oxide film.
- Crimp the Pin Adapter
Insert the stripped aluminum conductor fully into the compression barrel of the Pin Adapter. Select the appropriate crimping tool and dies (refer to the 'Catalog and Specification Information' table for die codes/indices matching the Pin Adapter). Make the required number of crimps, ensuring they are between the knurl or ink marks. Use circumferential or hex dies and compress from the base of the socket toward the cable. Remove any flash or excess inhibitor.
- Install Insulating Cover
After crimping the Pin Adapter onto the conductor, slip the mated insulating cover completely over the compression barrel. Ensure the cover is fully seated to maintain minimum electrical spacing.
- Connect to Equipment
Insert the copper pig-tail end of the Pin Adapter fully into the mechanical equipment connector body. Tighten the set screw to the equipment manufacturer’s recommended torque. If no specific torque is provided, refer to the 'Recommended Tightening Torque' values in the specification table.
