How to Install the Thomas & Betts PA25 Pin Adapter
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for safely installing the PA25 Pin Adapter, designed for terminating 250 MCM stranded aluminum conductors with a copper pig-tail into mechanical connectors.

Tools needed:
Crimping tool (with appropriate dies for PA25, e.g., T&B 87H or Burndy 299), Wire strippers, Wire brush, Torque wrench or screwdriver
Supplies needed:
PA25 Pin Adapter, 250 MCM stranded aluminum conductor, Mated insulating cover (supplied with adapter), Mechanical connector (Al-Cu listed or copper-only suitable)
- Disconnect Power and Select Adapter
WARNING: Disconnect all power to the electrical equipment before beginning installation to prevent risk of shock. Select the PA25 Pin Adapter, ensuring it is marked for 250 MCM aluminum wire size.
- Prepare Aluminum Conductor
Bend the 250 MCM aluminum cable to fit properly within the equipment before attaching the Pin Adapter. Strip 1.375 inches of insulation from the aluminum conductor. Exercise caution to avoid nicking or ringing the conductor strands. Thoroughly scratch brush the stripped portion of the aluminum conductor to remove any oxide film.
- Crimp the Pin Adapter
Fully insert the prepared aluminum conductor into the compression barrel of the PA25 Pin Adapter. Using a crimping tool equipped with the correct die (e.g., T&B Die Code 87H or Burndy Die Index 299, BROWN color code), make two adjacent crimps between the knurl or ink marks on the adapter. Ensure to use circumferential or hex dies and compress from the base of the socket towards the cable. Remove any excess inhibitor or flash after crimping.
- Install Insulating Cover and Verify Clearances
Slip the mated insulating cover completely over the compression barrel of the installed Pin Adapter. Verify that the mated insulating cover's diameter does not interfere with any part of the equipment. Ensure that the electrical spacing is maintained: more than 1/4" for 300V or less, and more than 1/2" for 301-600V. Confirm that the use of the Pin Adapter does not reduce the minimum wire bending space required by the National Electrical Code.
- Connect Copper Pig-Tail to Equipment
Insert the factory-installed copper pig-tail of the PA25 Pin Adapter fully into the mechanical connector body of the electrical equipment. Tighten the connector's set screw to the equipment manufacturer’s recommended torque. If no specific torque is provided, tighten to 250 inch-lbs.
