Molded Junction Box, Length 4 Inch x Width 4 Inch x Depth 2 Inch, Material Polycarbonate, Color GrayHow to Install the PA06 Pin Adapter
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for safely installing the PA06 Pin Adapter, designed to reliably terminate #6 AWG stranded aluminum conductors with a #8 AWG copper pig-tail into mechanical connectors.
Estimated time: 45m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Wire brush, Compression tool (crimper), T&B 50 or Burndy BG/243 (ORANGE color code) compression dies, Torque wrench or screwdriver
Supplies needed:
PA06 Pin Adapter, #6 AWG stranded aluminum conductor, Mated insulating cover (supplied with adapter)
- Disconnect Power and Select Adapter
WARNING: Disconnect all power to the electrical equipment before beginning installation to prevent risk of shock. Select the PA06 Pin Adapter, which is specifically designed for #6 AWG stranded aluminum wire and features a #8 AWG copper pig-tail.
- Prepare Aluminum Conductor and Perform Pre-Installation Checks
Strip 1 inch of insulation from the #6 AWG stranded aluminum conductor, ensuring not to nick or ring the strands. Thoroughly scratch brush the stripped aluminum conductor to remove any oxide film. Before crimping, verify the copper pig-tail length against the equipment connector, check the mated insulating cover diameter for interference, and confirm the wiring room provides the minimum wire bending space required by codes like NEC Table 312.6(A). Bend the aluminum cable to fit the equipment as needed before attaching the adapter.
- Crimp the Pin Adapter onto the Aluminum Conductor
Insert the prepared aluminum conductor fully into the compression barrel of the PA06 Pin Adapter. Using a compression tool with the appropriate ORANGE color-coded die (T&B 50 or Burndy BG/243), make the required number of crimps. Ensure crimps are made between the knurl or ink marks, overlapping if necessary, and compress from the base of the socket toward the cable. Remove any flash or excess inhibitor.
- Install Insulating Cover and Connect Copper Pig-Tail
After crimping, slip the mated insulating cover completely over the compression barrel of the Pin Adapter to ensure minimum electrical spacing. Fully insert the copper pig-tail into the mechanical equipment connector. Tighten the connector's set screw to the equipment manufacturer's recommended torque. If no specific torque is provided, tighten to 35 inch-lbs with a screwdriver or 100 inch-lbs with a wrench.
