How to Install the Pin Adapter (Type PA) for Aluminum Conductors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for safely installing the Pin Adapter (Type PA) with stranded aluminum conductors into mechanical connectors, ensuring proper termination and electrical spacing.
Tools needed:
Wire brush, Wire strippers, Crimping tool with appropriate dies, Screwdriver, Torque wrench
Supplies needed:
Pin Adapter (Type PA), Stranded aluminum conductor, Mated insulating cover, Mechanical equipment connector
- Disconnect Power
WARNING: Disconnect all power to the electrical equipment before beginning installation to prevent risk of electrical shock.
- Select Pin Adapter and Verify Compatibility
Select the Pin Adapter (Type PA) that matches your aluminum wire size. Verify the copper pig-tail length, mated insulating cover diameter, and wire bending space within the equipment connector to ensure physical compatibility and compliance with NEC Table 312.6(A) requirements.
- Prepare Conductor
Bend the aluminum cable to fit the equipment. Strip the insulation from the aluminum conductor to the length specified in column 'A' of the 'Catalog and Specification Information' table (e.g., 1 inch for PA01), ensuring not to nick or ring the conductor strands. Thoroughly scratch brush the stripped aluminum conductor to remove any oxide film.
- Crimp Pin Adapter
Insert the prepared aluminum conductor fully into the compression barrel of the Pin Adapter. Using the appropriate crimping tool and die (e.g., T&B Die Code 50 or Burndy Die Index BG/243 for PA01), make the required number of crimps between the knurl or ink marks. Compress from the base of the socket towards the cable, then remove any flash or excess inhibitor.
- Install Insulating Cover
Slip the provided insulating cover completely over the compression barrel of the installed Pin Adapter. Ensure the cover is fully seated to maintain minimum electrical spacing.
- Connect Pig-tail
Insert the copper pig-tail fully into the mechanical equipment connector body. Tighten the set screw to the equipment manufacturer's recommended torque. If no specific torque is provided, tighten to the recommended values from the 'Catalog and Specification Information' table (e.g., 50 inch-lbs for screwdriver or 125 inch-lbs for wrench for PA01).
