How to Install Copper Compression Connectors (Lugs and Splices)

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for properly installing copper compression connectors, including lugs and splices, ensuring a secure and reliable electrical connection.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimping tool, Appropriate crimping dies

Supplies needed:

Copper compression connector, Electrical cable, Oxide inhibitor

  1. Confirm Connector and Cable Compatibility

Before starting, ensure the copper compression connector is compatible with the electrical cable's AWG size. Refer to the product selection chart if necessary. WARNING: Disconnect power before beginning any installation to prevent risk of shock. Product should be installed by a qualified electrician in accordance with national and local electrical codes.

  2. Strip Cable Insulation

Carefully strip the insulation from the end of the electrical cable to the appropriate length for the connector. Ensure you do not damage the cable's strands during this process.

  3. Clean Cable Conductors

Thoroughly wire brush the exposed copper strands of the cable that will be inserted into the connector. This removes any oxidation and ensures a good electrical connection. Use a wire brush (e.g., ABB catalog number WWB1).

  4. Insert Cable into Connector

Fully insert the prepared cable end into the barrel of the compression connector until it bottoms out. Ensure no stray strands are outside the connector.

  5. Crimp the Connector

Consult the 'Tool and Die Index' to select the correct crimping tool and die combination for your cable and connector size. Perform the specified number of crimps as indicated in the chart. For splices, make the first crimp just outside the knurl on each side of the center, then space subsequent crimps uniformly. For lugs, make the first crimp at the inner end of the barrel and space crimps uniformly along the barrel.

  6. Clean Excess Inhibitor

After crimping, wipe off any excess oxide inhibitor that may have been expelled from the connector during the crimping process.
