How to Install Copper Compression Connectors, Lugs, and Splices
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the proper installation of copper compression connectors, lugs, and splices, ensuring secure and reliable electrical connections.
Estimated time: 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimping tool, Crimping dies
Supplies needed:
Copper compression connector (lug or splice), Copper stranded cable, Clean cloth
- Ensure Safety and Verify Compatibility
WARNING: Disconnect all power to the circuit before beginning installation to prevent risk of shock. Ensure the product is installed by a qualified electrician in accordance with national and local electrical codes. Confirm the compatibility of the copper compression connector (lug or splice) with the copper stranded cable size.
- Prepare the Cable for Connection
Carefully strip the insulation from the end of the copper stranded cable, ensuring no damage occurs to the cable's individual strands. Use a wire brush (e.g., ABB catalog number WWB1) to thoroughly brush the stripped portion of the cable that will be inserted into the connector.
- Insert Cable and Crimp the Connector
Fully insert the prepared copper cable into the barrel of the compression connector. Consult the provided Tool and Die Index to select the correct crimping tool and die combination for your specific cable size and connector. Crimp the connector the number of times indicated in the chart for the chosen tool/die combination. For splices, make the first crimp just outside the knurl on each side of the center, then space subsequent crimps uniformly along the splice. For lugs, make the first crimp at the inner end of the barrel and space crimps uniformly along the barrel.
- Finalize the Connection
After crimping, use a clean cloth to wipe off any excess oxide inhibitor that may be present on the connector.
