How to Install Copper Compression Connectors, Lugs, and Splices

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for properly installing copper compression connectors, lugs, and splices, including cable preparation and crimping procedures. Installation should be performed by a qualified electrician in accordance with national and local electrical codes.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

Wire brush, Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Appropriate crimping dies

Supplies needed:

Copper compression connector, lug, or splice, Electrical cable, Oxide inhibitor

  1. Confirm Compatibility

Confirm that the chosen copper compression connector, lug, or splice is compatible with the electrical cable's material (copper) and AWG size.

  2. Strip Cable Insulation

Carefully strip the insulation from the end of the electrical cable, ensuring no damage occurs to the cable's strands.

  3. Clean Cable Strands

Using a wire brush, thoroughly clean the cable strands on the side that will be inserted into the connector to remove any oxidation.

  4. Insert Cable into Connector

Fully insert the prepared cable end into the barrel of the compression connector, lug, or splice until it bottoms out.

  5. Crimp the Connector

Consult the Tool and Die Index to select the correct crimping tool and die combination for your cable size. Crimp the connector the specified number of times, spacing crimps uniformly along the barrel. For splices, make the first crimp just outside the knurl on each side of the center. For lugs, make the first crimp at the inner end of the barrel.

  6. Clean Excess Inhibitor

After crimping, wipe off any excess oxide inhibitor that may have been displaced from the connector.
