How to Install Copper Compression Connectors (Lugs and Splices)
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing copper compression connectors, including lugs and splices, ensuring proper cable preparation and crimping for secure electrical connections.
Estimated time: 30m
Tools needed:
Crimping tool, Appropriate crimping dies, Wire brush
Supplies needed:
Copper compression connector (lug or splice), Copper stranded electrical cable, Clean cloth, Oxide inhibitor (if not pre-applied)
- Prioritize Safety
WARNING: Disconnect all power to the circuit before beginning installation to prevent the risk of electrical shock. CAUTION: This product must be installed by a qualified electrician in strict accordance with all national and local electrical codes.
- Verify Connector and Cable Compatibility
Before proceeding, confirm that the copper compression connector (lug or splice) is compatible with the specific size and type of copper stranded electrical cable you are using. Refer to product specifications and cable ratings.
- Strip Cable Insulation
Carefully strip the insulation from the end of the electrical cable to the appropriate length required for full insertion into the connector barrel. Take extreme care to avoid nicking, cutting, or damaging any of the cable's individual strands during this process.
- Brush Cable Strands
Using a wire brush (such as an ABB catalog number WWB1 or equivalent), thoroughly brush the exposed copper strands of the cable. This step is crucial for removing any oxidation or contaminants that could impede a proper electrical connection.
- Insert Cable into Connector
Fully insert the prepared and brushed end of the cable into the barrel of the copper compression connector. Ensure the cable is seated completely to the bottom of the connector barrel.
- Crimp the Connector Securely
Consult the provided Tool and Die Index to select the correct crimping tool and corresponding die combination for your specific cable size and connector type. Crimp the connector the number of times indicated in the chart, ensuring uniform spacing. For splices, make the first crimp just outside the knurl on each side of the center. For lugs, make the first crimp at the inner end of the barrel.
- Clean Excess Oxide Inhibitor
After crimping, use a clean cloth to wipe off any excess oxide inhibitor that may have been displaced from the connection. This ensures a clean finish and prevents potential issues.
