How to Install Copper Compression Connectors (Lugs and Splices)

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for safely installing copper compression connectors, including lugs and splices, ensuring proper cable preparation and crimping according to manufacturer specifications.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimping tool

Supplies needed:

Copper stranded cable, Copper compression connectors (lugs/splices), Oxide inhibitor

  1. Disconnect Power and Review Safety

WARNING: Before beginning any installation, disconnect all power to prevent risk of shock. CAUTION: This product must be installed by a qualified electrician in accordance with national and local electrical codes. Read and understand all instructions and safety information in this manual before proceeding.

  2. Prepare Cable and Confirm Compatibility

Confirm that the copper compression connector is compatible with the specific copper stranded cable size. Carefully strip the cable insulation to the required length, taking care to avoid any damage to the cable's strands.

  3. Clean the Cable

Using a wire brush (e.g., ABB catalog number WWB1), thoroughly brush the cable side that will be inserted into the connector. This ensures a clean surface for optimal electrical contact.

  4. Insert Cable into Connector

Fully insert the prepared and cleaned cable into the barrel of the compression connector until it reaches the internal stop. Ensure no strands are left outside the connector.

  5. Crimp the Connector

Refer to the 'Tool and Die Index' provided in the documentation to select the appropriate crimping tool and die combination for your specific cable size. Crimp the connector the number of times indicated in the chart. For splices, make the first crimp just outside the knurl on each side of the center and space crimps uniformly. For lugs, make the first crimp at the inner end of the barrel and space crimps uniformly along the barrel.

  6. Clean Excess Inhibitor

After completing all crimps, wipe off any excess oxide inhibitor that may have been expelled from the connector and cable connection. This ensures a clean and professional finish.
