This guide provides step-by-step instructions for safely installing compression connectors, lugs, and splices on electrical cables, ensuring proper crimping and connection integrity.
Estimated time: 20m
Tools needed:
Wire brush (e.g., ABB catalog number WWB1), Crimping tool (e.g., Blackburn, Burndy, T&B, Dieless hydraulic)
Supplies needed:
Compression connector (lug or splice), Electrical cable, Oxide inhibitor
- Prepare for Installation and Ensure Safety
WARNING: Risk of shock, disconnect power before installation. CAUTION: Installation must be performed by a qualified electrician in accordance with national and local electrical codes. Confirm the compatibility of the aluminum connector and cable size before proceeding.
- Prepare the Cable
Strip cable insulation, being careful to avoid damage to the cable's strands. Use a wire brush (e.g., ABB catalog number WWB1) to thoroughly brush the cable side that will be inserted into the connector to remove any oxidation.
- Insert and Crimp the Cable
Fully insert the prepared cable into the connector. Refer to the 'Tool and Die Index' in the product documentation to select the appropriate crimping tool and die combination for your specific cable size. Crimp the connector the number of times indicated in the chart for your chosen tool/die combination. For splices, make the first crimp just outside the knurl on each side of the center and space subsequent crimps uniformly. For lugs, make the first crimp at the inner end of the barrel and space crimps uniformly along the barrel.
- Finalize the Connection
Wipe off any excess oxide inhibitor from the completed connection to ensure a clean finish.
