How to Install Copper Compression Connectors, Lugs, and Splices

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for safely installing copper compression connectors, lugs, and splices, including cable preparation and crimping procedures. Installation should be performed by a qualified electrician in accordance with national and local electrical codes.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimping tool, Appropriate crimping dies

Supplies needed:

Copper compression connector, lug, or splice, Electrical cable, Oxide inhibitor (if not pre-filled)

  1. Disconnect Power and Ensure Safety

WARNING: Risk of shock. Before beginning any installation or servicing, disconnect all power to the circuit. Ensure the area is safe for work and follow all national and local electrical codes. CAUTION: Product should be installed by a qualified electrician.

  2. Confirm Connector and Cable Compatibility

Verify that the selected copper compression connector, lug, or splice is compatible with the cable size and material. Refer to product specifications and the provided Tool and Die Index for proper selection.

  3. Strip Cable Insulation

Carefully strip the insulation from the cable end to the appropriate length required for the connector. Ensure that the cable's strands are not damaged during this process.

  4. Wire Brush the Cable

Thoroughly wire brush the stripped portion of the cable that will be inserted into the connector. This removes any oxidation and ensures a good electrical connection. Use a suitable wire brush, such as ABB catalog number WWB1.

  5. Insert Cable into Connector

Fully insert the prepared cable into the barrel of the compression connector, lug, or splice until it reaches the internal stop or is flush with the end of the barrel.

  6. Crimp the Connector

Consult the Tool and Die Index to select the correct crimping tool and die combination for your specific cable size and connector. Crimp the connector the specified number of times, spacing crimps uniformly according to the instructions for splices (just outside the knurl) or lugs (at the inner end of the barrel).

  7. Clean Excess Oxide Inhibitor

After crimping, wipe off any excess oxide inhibitor that may have been expelled from the connector during the crimping process.

  8. Verify Installation and Restore Power

Visually inspect all crimps for proper formation and ensure the connection is secure. Once the installation is verified as complete and safe, and all safety precautions are observed, restore power to the circuit.
