Molded Junction Box, Length 4 Inch x Width 4 Inch x Depth 2 Inch, Material Polycarbonate, Color GrayHow to Install Compression Connectors (Lugs and Splices)
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of compression connectors, including preparing the cable, inserting it into the connector, and crimping. Installation must be performed by a qualified electrician in accordance with national and local electrical codes. Disconnect power before beginning installation to avoid risk of shock.
Estimated time: 20m
Tools needed:
Crimping tool with appropriate dies, Wire brush (e.g., ABB WWB1)
Supplies needed:
Compression connector, Electrical cable, Oxide inhibitor (if applicable)
- Verify Connector and Cable Compatibility
Before starting, confirm that the compression connector is compatible with the cable size and material (e.g., aluminum or copper). Refer to product specifications and the Tool and Die Index for proper matching.
- Strip Cable Insulation
Carefully strip the insulation from the end of the cable, ensuring no damage occurs to the cable's strands. The stripped length should allow for full insertion into the connector barrel.
- Wire Brush Cable End
Thoroughly wire brush the stripped end of the cable that will be inserted into the connector. This removes oxides and ensures a good electrical connection. Use a suitable wire brush, such as ABB catalog number WWB1.
- Insert Cable into Connector
Fully insert the prepared cable end into the barrel of the compression connector until it bottoms out. Ensure all strands are contained within the connector.
- Crimp the Connector
Consult the Tool and Die Index to select the correct crimping tool and die combination for your cable size and connector type. Crimp the connector the specified number of times. For splices, make the first crimp just outside the knurl on each side of the center and space subsequent crimps uniformly. For lugs, make the first crimp at the inner end of the barrel and space crimps uniformly along the barrel.
- Clean Excess Oxide Inhibitor
After crimping, wipe off any excess oxide inhibitor that may have been expelled from the connector during the crimping process.
