How to Install Elastimold 600/900 AMP Deadbreak Plug and Well Products
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and voltage testing of Elastimold 600/900 AMP Deadbreak Plug and Well Products, designed for high voltage power distribution systems.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Torque wrench, ELASTIMOLD 600SW spanner wrench, Hotstick, Suitable sensing device (for capacitive test points)
Supplies needed:
Deadbreak Plug or Well product, Elbow or Bushing Extension, Lubricant (supplied with product), Silicone lubricant, Stud (if not pre-installed on mating interface), HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s)
- Prepare for Installation and Safety Checks
Before beginning, ensure all apparatus are de-energized. Inspect all parts for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating components. Remove any protective shipping covers and replace them with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors if the circuit is to be submerged or energized later. Ensure all required tools and the supplied lubricant are at hand, and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure. This product must only be installed by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical safety practices.
- Assemble and Lubricate the Plug/Well
Remove protective caps from the plug or well product. If the 600 amp mating interface is not equipped with a stud, hand tighten the stud into the 600 amp interface on the plug or well. Lubricate both the elbow and its mating part thoroughly with the supplied lubricant only. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants, as they may harm the product. Ensure all surfaces of the elbow and mating parts remain clean during this process.
- Connect and Torque the Assembly
Carefully push the plug or well into the elbow or bushing extension until the threads engage. Using a torque wrench, tighten the assembly. For insulating plugs, apply 50 to 60 foot-pounds of torque. For connector plugs, tap plugs, or tap wells, use an ELASTIMOLD 600SW spanner wrench with the torque wrench, applying an indicated torque of 40 to 48 foot-pounds. Refer to special instructions IS-0915 for K651 and 750 rubber connecting plugs.
- Install Voltage Detection Cap (If Applicable)
If an insulating plug is used as a mating part, clean and lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap with silicone lubricant. Place the cap onto the elbow and push down firmly until it snaps securely into place. Proceed to perform the voltage test as described in the following steps.
- Perform Voltage Test
Remove the test point cap using a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle rather than pulling directly in line with the assembly. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device and is not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points to determine if the cable is energized. Contamination, moisture, or incorrect equipment can cause false readings. Always treat the elbow as energized until a 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means to prevent serious injury. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it on the test point.
