How to Install the K671BGAD Grounding Device and K676BGADDR Insulated Cap
A comprehensive guide for the safe installation and initial setup of the K671BGAD Deadbreak Grounding Device and K676BGADDR Insulated Cap with Test Point on a 600Amp elbow.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
1” deep socket (P/N 600-570), Torque wrench, Hotstick tools (x2), Capacitive voltage sensing device
Supplies needed:
Supplied lubricant (DO NOT SUBSTITUTE), Copper wire (No 14 AWG / 2.55mm), Silicone lubricant, Socket type hot line grounding clamp and cable
- Prepare for Installation and Safety Checks
Ensure all apparatus are de-energized before beginning installation or removal of any parts. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety practices. Inspect all parts for damage, correct rating, and compatibility with mating components. Remove any protective shipping covers and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before energizing or submerging the circuit. Read all instructions thoroughly before starting.
- Install the K671BGAD Grounding Connector
First, install the 600Amp elbow onto the apparatus bushing following the instructions provided with the elbow; do not install any insulating plug or cap. Clean and lubricate both the K671BGAD Grounding Connector interface and the 600Amp elbow interface using only the supplied lubricant. Insert the K671BGAD Grounding Connector into the elbow and rotate it clockwise to engage the stud. Engage a 1” deep socket (P/N 600-570) onto the K671BGAD Grounding Connector and use a torque wrench to continue rotating clockwise. Once the connector stops rotating, tighten it to 55/60 foot/pounds torque. Remove the socket. Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No 14AWG/2.55mm) through the grounding eye on the K671BGAD Grounding Connector, twist it tightly without damaging the eye, and connect the free end to the system ground.
- Install the K676BGADDR Insulating Cap
Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No 14 AWG / 2.55mm) through the grounding eye of the insulated cap, form a small loop, and twist tightly. Connect the free end of this grounding wire to the system ground, ensuring its length is sufficient to reach the grounding point plus an additional 90 inches for wrapping. Clean and lubricate the K676BGADDR insulating cap and the K671BGAD interface with the supplied lubricant. Attach a first hotstick tool to the insulated cap's assembly/disassembly bail and push the receptacle onto the bushing interface until it stops. With a second hotstick, engage the grounding wire and apply slight tension, wrapping it loosely around the center of the insulated cap. While pushing against the bushing interface with the first hotstick, rotate clockwise until the threads between the bushing and the cap engage. Discontinue pushing and continue turning until resistance is felt; DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN. Remove the second hotstick.
- Install the Ground Clamp (Optional)
If temporary grounding is required, attach a socket type hot line grounding clamp and cable to the 1” diameter copper ball extending from the K671BGAD interface. Always follow your utility’s specific operating procedures for this step.
- Perform Voltage Test (Before Disconnecting)
WARNING: DO NOT DISCONNECT WHILE ENERGIZED. To ensure the system is de-energized, perform a voltage test. Remove the voltage detection point cap from the K676BGADDR insulated cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device and is not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points, following the manufacturer’s directions. Treat the elbow as energized until a 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means to prevent serious injury. After voltage detection, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it securely on the test point.
