How to Install K655/K675LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and connection of K655/K675LR and 655/675LR deadbreak elbow connectors. It covers cable preparation, lug crimping, and final assembly for high voltage systems.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimping tool, Torque wrench, Hotstick, Suitable voltage sensing device, Cleaning supplies
Supplies needed:
K655/K675LR or 655/675LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector kit, Lubricant (silicone), Threaded stud, No. 14 AWG Copper wire (or equivalent), Suitable grounding connector, Tape marker, Grounding device (if applicable), HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (for shipping cover replacement)
- Prepare Cable for Assembly
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation. Position the cable with enough slack for elbow removal. For concentric neutral cable, unwind the neutral wires. Cut the cable 1-3/4” (45mm) from the center line of the mating product. Clean the outer surface of the cable for 24” (610mm) or up to the bent back concentric neutral wires. Remove the outer jacket (if applicable) and prepare the cable according to its type (e.g., Non-Jacketed, Jacketed Shield Wires, Flat Metallic Tape Shield, Fabric Tape Shield, Longitudinally Corrugated Shield). Refer to specific instructions for any grounding devices or cable seals being used.
- Install Cable Adapter
Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4” (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and then lubricate the cable insulation, working toward the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker.
- Prepare Conductor and Crimp Lug
Remove protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter, taking care not to nick the adapter or conductor. Ensure the exposed conductor length is 4-1/4” – 4-9/16” (108mm-116mm); if not, redo. For copper, fully insert the conductor into the compression lug. For aluminum, wire brush the conductor and immediately insert it. Before crimping, verify the 'Check Dimension' is less than 6-3/8”. Crimp the lug per its instructions, starting at the cable end. Wipe off excess inhibitor. After crimping, confirm the distance from the lug end to the cable adapter is 6-3/8” to 7-1/8” (162mm-181mm); if not, redo.
- Install Elbow
Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Verify the cable adapter remains flush with the tape marker; reposition if necessary. Remove the tape marker.
- Connect Mating Products
DANGER: DO NOT CONNECT OR DISCONNECT MATING PRODUCTS WHILE ENERGIZED. DO NOT ENERGIZED WHILE DISCONNECTED. Remove protective caps from the elbow and mating part. If the mating part lacks a stud, hand tighten the supplied threaded stud into it. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and mating part, keeping surfaces clean. Push the elbow onto the mating part, aligning the compression lug hole with the stud. Clean and lubricate the mating part for the elbow's opposite end. Insert and hand tighten the mating part, then torque it per its instructions. If using an insulating plug, clean and lubricate its voltage detection cap and push it onto the elbow until it snaps into place.
- Ground the Cable Shield
Insert one end of a wire (at least No. 14 AWG Copper equivalent) through the grounding eye, twist to form a small loop, and connect it to ground using a suitable connector. Ensure the cable shield is grounded according to the grounding device instructions or an alternate method if no device is used. Waterproof the cable jacket to prevent moisture ingress.
- Perform Voltage Test and Finalize
CAUTION: For 600amp L-Kits, tighten each component to specified torque. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device, not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. Use a suitable sensing device, following its manufacturer’s directions, to determine if the cable is energized. Contamination, moisture, or incorrect equipment can cause false readings. Treat the elbow as energized until 'no voltage' is confirmed by other means to prevent serious injury. After testing, clean and lubricate the cap's inner surface with silicone lubricant and replace it on the test point.
