How to Install K655/K675LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing 600-ampere or 900-ampere deadbreak elbow connectors on 15kV and 25kV class systems. It covers cable preparation, connector assembly, and final connection to high voltage apparatus.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Cable cutting tool, Cable stripping tool, Measuring tape or ruler, Beveling tool, Wire brush (for aluminum conductors), Crimping tool, Torque wrench, Hotstick, Capacitive voltage sensing device
Supplies needed:
655/675LR or K655/K675LR Elbow Connector, Cable adapter, Compression lug, Insulating plug (optional), Lubricant (silicone), Threaded stud, Cleaning agent, Tape marker, No. 14 AWG Copper grounding wire (or equivalent), Ground connector
- Prepare the Cable for Connection
Assemble the cable in its final position, ensuring enough slack for elbow removal. For concentric neutral cable, unwind the neutral wires. Cut the cable 1-3/4” (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product. Clean the outer surface of the cable for 24” (610mm) or up to the bent back concentric neutral wires. Remove the outer jacket (if applicable) and prepare the cable according to the specified dimensions for insulation, semi-con shield, and tape marker.
- Install Cable Adapter and Compression Lug
Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4” (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and lubricate the cable insulation, working towards the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker. Remove the protruding cable insulation, cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter; ensure the exposed conductor length is between 4-1/4” to 4-9/16” (108mm-116mm). For copper conductors, fully insert the conductor into the compression lug. For aluminum conductors, wire brush the conductor and immediately fully insert it. Measure the “Check Dimension” (must be less than 6-3/8”) before crimping. Crimp the compression lug according to its instructions. Wipe off any excess inhibitor. Verify the distance from the end of the compression lug to the cable adapter is between 6-3/8” to 7-1/8” (162mm-181mm).
- Install the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Ensure the cable adapter remains flush with the tape marker; reposition if necessary. Remove the tape marker.
- Connect the Elbow to Mating Apparatus
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation. Do not connect or disconnect mating products while energized. Do not energize while disconnected. Remove protective caps from the elbow and the mating part. If the mating part lacks a stud, hand tighten the threaded stud (supplied with the elbow) into it. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part. Push the elbow onto the mating part, aligning the compression lug hole with the stud. For the opposite end, clean and lubricate its mating part, then insert it into the elbow, engage threads, and hand tighten. Torque the mating part as per its instructions.
- Ground the Cable Shield and Perform Voltage Test
Insert a No. 14 AWG Copper (or equivalent) wire through the grounding eye and twist to form a small loop. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. Ground the cable shield according to instructions for a grounding device, or by an alternate method if no device is used. If an insulating plug is used, clean and lubricate the voltage detection cap and snap it onto the elbow. To test for voltage: Remove the test point cap with a hotstick (peel off at an angle). WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device; do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points to determine if the cable is energized. Treat the elbow as energized until “no voltage” is confirmed by other means. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside of the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it on the test point.
