How to Install and Ground the K650SLGB Ground Rod and Sacrificial Cap
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for safely installing the K650SLGB ground rod and replacing the sacrificial cap on de-energized high voltage electrical equipment. It includes critical safety warnings and proper installation techniques.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Cutting or spiking tool, Hex Wrench, Wire strippers
Supplies needed:
Sacrificial Cap, Lubricant, K650SLGB Ground Rod, Hot line clamp (bar or ball type), 4/0 grounding cable, 14 AWG gage wire
- Ensure De-energized Circuit and Safety Checks
Before beginning, ensure all apparatus are de-energized. Install a cutting or spiking tool on the sacrificial cap and cut or spike it on the line to confirm the circuit is de-energized. Do not touch or move energized products. Verify all components for proper fit and inspect for damage.
- Remove the Old Sacrificial Cap
Remove the ground wire from the old cap. Rotate the cut or spiked sacrificial cap counter-clockwise to remove it. Discard the old cap safely.
- Install the K650SLGB Grounding Rod (if applicable)
If installing a K650SLGB grounding rod, install it onto the sacrificial male interface. Use the supplied hex wrench to tighten the rod until the wrench twists, indicating a torque of 75-110 in/lbs. If not installing a grounding rod, proceed to Step 5.
- Attach Grounding Cable to the Rod (if applicable)
Attach either a bar or ball type hot line clamp with a 4/0 grounding cable to the K650SLGB grounding rod. Ensure not to loosen the bar while tightening the clamp. Connect the opposite end of the 4/0 grounding cable to the system ground. Remove the hot line clamp and grounding rod once repairs are completed.
- Inspect, Clean, and Lubricate the Interface
Inspect the sacrificial male interface for any distortion caused by high fault current; replace the Buss Bar if distortion is present. Clean the male interface thoroughly. Apply the supplied lubricant to both the male interface and the inside of the new sacrificial cap.
- Install the New Sacrificial Cap
Install the new sacrificial cap by rotating it clockwise 9 to 10 turns until it stops turning. No additional torque is required. Verify that the gap between the new cap and the shoulder of the splice is 1/8 inch or less around the entire cap.
- Attach Grounding Wire to the New Cap
Attach a 14 AWG gauge wire through the grounding eye of the new cap and tighten it by twisting. Connect the other end of this wire directly to the system ground.
