How to Panel Mount and Wire a J-Line Series 150A Receptacle (JRSA1544LR)

This guide provides detailed instructions for preparing, drilling, wiring, and securely mounting a J-Line Series 150A receptacle (JRSA1544LR) onto a sheet metal enclosure, followed by essential electrical testing.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Cable Cutters, Screw Drivers, Ohmmeter, Wire Strippers, Torque Wrench, Allen Wrenches, Pipe Wrenches, Drill

Supplies needed:

Flexible cords and cables (150A: #1/0 flexible or #2/0 19 strand), Mounting screws, Receptacle gasket, Sealing washers, Lock washers, Nuts, Copper wire, Sheet metal enclosure (14 gauge minimum)

  1. Safety First: Disconnect Power

WARNING: ELECTRICAL HAZARD! BE SURE POWER IS OFF! Before beginning any installation, ensure that all power to the circuit is completely disconnected and locked out to prevent accidental energization.

  2. Prepare Mounting Enclosure

Select a sheet metal enclosure of at least 14 gauge with an equivalent type rating to the receptacle. Drill four mounting holes in the enclosure according to the drilling plan for 150A JRSX series: A=3.25 inches, B=3.36 inches, C=0.26 inches (clearance hole diameter). Securely fasten the enclosure if not already done.

  3. Prepare Cable and Conductors

Install the service supply cable into the enclosure, leaving sufficient length for connections. Strip the cable jacket and conductor insulation to the dimensions specified for 150A J-Line receptacles: A=3-5/8 inches for the jacket and B=1-1/16 inches for conductor insulation. Ensure the selected cable size complies with NEC Article 400 (150A: #1/0 flexible or #2/0 19 strand).

  4. Wire the Receptacle Contacts

Loosen the pressure screws (#12D) in the receptacle contacts (#12C). Insert the stripped end of each conductor into its proper sleeve terminal (#12C). Tighten the pressure screws to the specified torque values: for Line/Neutral conductors, use 150-180 in-lbs for #2-1 AWG or 250 in-lbs for 1/0-2/0 AWG. Attach the ground wire to lug #12A if furnished. Ensure a ground wire is also connected from the receptacle to the enclosure ground to comply with NEC Article 250.

  5. Mount the Receptacle to the Enclosure

Position the receptacle gasket (#11) and the receptacle (#12) against the enclosure, aligning the drilled holes. Secure the receptacle to the enclosure using four screws (#13), sealing washers, lock washers, and nuts. Place the lock washers and nuts on the inside of the enclosure. Orient the receptacle so that the flap cap opens upwards (12 o'clock position). Torque the mounting screws (#13) to 35 in-lbs.

  6. Assemble Receptacle Cover

Assemble the cover to the receptacle. If a watertight receptacle, secure the screw cap (#15) by removing one of the four screws (#13) from the housing (#12E) and reassembling with the screw cap's chain secured under the screw head. If a weatherproof receptacle, hold the flap ring (#14) flush against the shoulder of the housing (#12) and tighten the set screws.

  7. Perform Electrical Tests

Before connecting to power, perform electrical tests. Use an Ohmmeter to conduct continuity checks of all wiring to verify correct phasing and grounding connections. Check insulation resistance to ensure there are no short circuits or unwanted grounds within the system. Once tests are complete and satisfactory, connect all devices in the system, turn the power on, and test the system for proper operation.
