How to Install the J3-222-15 Deadbreak Junction (Universal Mount)
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for safely installing the J3-222-15 Deadbreak Junction using the universal mount method, including mounting, assembly, grounding, and preparing for operation.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Wrench set (for 3/8" and 1/2" hex nuts/screws), Wire strippers, Fastener driver (e.g., drill or screwdriver, depending on user-supplied fasteners)
Supplies needed:
J3-222-15 Deadbreak Junction (includes Base Bracket, Base Plate, 4 Universal Brackets, Mounting Hardware Prepack), Suitable fasteners (for mounting universal brackets to surface, supplied by user), Grounding wire (No. 2 solid to 1/0 stranded), ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant, HV insulated caps (for unused bushings)
- Ensure Safety and De-energize
Before beginning any installation, ensure all apparatus is completely de-energized. This product should only be installed by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety practices. Failure to follow safety instructions can result in serious injury or death.
- Mark Mounting Location
Determine the desired location for the junction assembly. Use the base plate as a template, place it on the mounting surface, and accurately mark all slot locations for drilling or fastener placement.
- Attach First Pair of Universal Brackets
Securely attach two (2) universal brackets to the flat mounting surface using suitable fasteners (supplied by user). Ensure they are tightened firmly to prevent any movement during operation.
- Attach Remaining Universal Brackets
Attach the remaining two (2) universal brackets to the two brackets already mounted on the surface. Position them at the desired angle and secure them using the supplied 3/8” hex head cap screws, external tooth lock washers, and 3/8” hex nuts. Tighten securely.
- Assemble Junction to Base Bracket and Base Plate
Assemble the deadbreak junction to the base bracket assembly and base plate. Use two (2) 1/2” hex head cap screws, two (2) 1/2” split lock washers, and two (2) 1/2” hex nuts, attaching them to the center mounting holes on the bracket assembly. Tighten all components securely.
- Attach Junction Assembly to Universal Brackets
Attach the complete deadbreak junction assembly to the previously mounted universal brackets. Use the supplied 1/2” split lock washers, 1/2” hex nuts, and 1/2” hex head cap screws. Ensure the parking stand is in the upright position before tightening all hardware securely.
- Ground the Assembly
Ground the base bracket assembly and the junction’s black conductive jacket. A grounding lug is provided on the base bracket for this purpose. Connect a grounding wire, accommodating sizes from No. 2 solid to 1/0 stranded, to this lug and ensure a secure ground connection.
- Prepare Operating Interfaces
Remove any protective shipping caps from the operating interfaces. Clean each interface thoroughly and lubricate them with an ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant. Do not substitute with other lubricants, as they may harm the product or its mating components.
- Install Insulated Caps
If any operating interfaces are not going to be utilized, install appropriate HV insulated caps on these unused bushings before energizing the circuit. Do not use the protective shipping caps for this purpose, as they are not insulated.
