How to Install ATL and ASP Aluminum Compression Lugs and Splices

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for safely installing aluminum compression lugs and splices (Type ATL and ASP) on stranded, compressed, compact aluminum and copper conductors.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Wire brush (T&B WWB1 or equivalent), Crimping tool, Appropriate crimping dies

Supplies needed:

Aluminum compression lug or splice (Type ATL or ASP), Aluminum or Copper conductor cable, Oxide inhibitor

  1. Turn Off Power and Verify Connector Compatibility

WARNING: ELECTRICAL HAZARD! TURN POWER OFF before beginning any work. Verify the wire size marked on the aluminum connector matches the actual cable size to be used.

  2. Prepare the Conductor

Carefully strip the cable insulation to the appropriate length, ensuring no damage occurs to the conductor's strands. Use a wire brush (T&B catalog number WWB1 or equivalent) to thoroughly brush the conductor surface that will be inserted into the connector.

  3. Insert and Crimp the Conductor

Fully insert the prepared conductor into the connector barrel. Refer to the 'Tool and Die Index' in the documentation to select the correct crimping tool and die combination for your specific cable size. Crimp the connector the specified number of times, spacing crimps uniformly along the barrel (for lugs) or just outside the knurl on each side of the center and uniformly along the splice (for splices).

  4. Clean the Connection

After crimping, wipe off any excess oxide inhibitor from the completed connection to ensure a clean and reliable connection.
